Don't Ever Let Anyone Tell You Its "Just" Sports

The awesome Rick Reilly's last column addresses fathering and sports. Until 2008 the "back page" columnist for Sports Illustrated, Reilly is retiring from ESPN. He is already a member of the Sportswriters Hall of Fame and was 11 times voted Sportswriter of the Year.

Another Notch in Google’s Belt Of Social Fail

Yesterday was the third Sunday in June, the officially recognized date of Father's Day in the US and many other countries. Google really, really wanted to remind you of that fact, not only celebrating the day with a special Google Doodle, but also putting reminders on the front page of Google Search and a special "Reminder: Call Dad" note in the chat roster of Gmail Calling. Many people were not happy about it. [more inside]

"They're not that easy to hit," John said.

Last week, before Jack McDonald died, he told his son, Toronto Blue Jays utility infielder John McDonald (14 home runs in a 12 year professional career), to hit a home run for him when he went back to the team. "They're not that easy to hit," John said.

John rejoined his team and got his first at-bat in the ninth inning this past Sunday. Father's Day.

I love you, Dad!

A salute to my Dad and all the good Daddies out there for all the sacrifices you made for us; for making us laugh; for letting us come to work with you to help drive the bus; for looking after us and teaching us things; for never being a phony; for all the awesome things you were and for all the awful things you weren't, well for all that, we have a few words we'd like to say to you.

What Dads Don't Need for Father's Day

What Dads Don't Need for Father's Day: "A team of psychologists headed by Dr. Toni Zimmerman from Colorado State University analyzed the top-selling parenting books. Using a feminist perspective, they trawled the books for hidden gender messages. In findings published earlier this year, they concluded that the two mega-best sellers, John Gray's Children Are from Heaven and Laura Schlessinger's Parenthood by Proxy: Don't Have Them If You Won't Raise Them are filled with stereotypes, formulaic advice and information that does not conform to research findings." Both books scored low in a feminist analysis of best-selling parental advice books. Kathleen Trigiani also wrote a series of essays on John Gray entitled "Out of the Cave: Exploring Gray's Anatomy".

I got your tool, right here.

So you decide to get Dad a toolbox for Father's day. Should it have electricity? A fuel tank? A computer? A built-in vacuum cleaner? A radio? No, he needs a manly toolbox, one he can use to cook steaks.

The eight worst TV dads, according to EW.

The eight worst TV dads, according to EW. Just in time for Father's Day. Tony Soprano is #1, Ozzy #2. Aw, Ozzy is a bit mad, but at least he wants to do right by his kids. I make no excuse for Tony Soprano. He'll buy Meadow whatever she wants, but then again, he offed her boyfriend. Any bad (or good) TV dads to discuss?

Father's day is almost here, and I KNOW that I deserve a great gift for being such a good Dad!

Not buying it, are you? Neither are my kids, which is probably why I won't be getting one of these. Any other fathers out there with a wish list?
