Phriday Phlash Physics Phun

Physics Games is a collection of browser games that all have at least a rudimentary physics model. Some of the games I've enjoyed are Roly Poly Eliminator, Totem Destroyer 1 & 2, Demolition City and Red Ball. Most are fairly simple but some are complex, notably IncrediBots 1 & 2, which might as well require an engineering degree (slight hyperbole). My absolute favorite type of game on this site is the destroy-castles-with-a-trebuchet game, handsomely represented by not one but three games, Castle Clout, Castle Clout: Return of the King (no Tolkien connection) and Crush the Castle. All this is but a small sample of what's on offer.

Physics Invader takes the classic Space Invaders idea and, as you might guess from the name, adds physics.
Star Stories explains the life and death of stars using a multimedia
approach that incorporates images, animation, video and text. From the official website of the Nobel Foundation. Don't miss out on the other cool games . One of the games has been posted before, but Star Stories is hot off of the presses.

An Engineer's Delight

Friday Flash Fun Some stuff I wish I'd known when I started:

It seems like a sparse toy at first, compared to something like Incredible Machine. But it's more free-form and the sparseness is a good challenge.

You can move the pink object around inside the blue box.

The water rod hasn't been of any use to me so far.

You can move the view around by using the Move tool.

Friday Flash Fun: Roller Coaster

This little game lets you learn about G Forces AND have fun. From the University of Cambridge's Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies.

You must build a roller coaster that thrills the occupants, but be warned - if they throw up your score gets reset, and making them black out is also frowned upon.

Sources: Personal Opinion.

We need to get Stephen Hawking an AskMe membership. Stephen Hawking asks the Yahoo public how the human race is going to survive. Yahoo staff are excited.
But the answers? Well, let's just say that there may be more utility in eating tweens after the nuclear apocalypse than listening to their ideas.
To balance the stupid, Hawking has several of his lectures online. And there's great stuff on PBS's Stephen Hawking's Universe (though it's aimed at providing a basic understanding of astrophysics).
Or, for a more animated view MC Hawking's (sometimes clumsy) "What We Need More of Is Science.
(Previous mefi hawking here, here [where he seems to be answering his later question], here [where he presents another view on how humans will survive], and here.)

Kung Fu Science: The BBC News article claims that the site "is primarily aimed at 11 to 16-year-olds," but I refuse to let temporal adolescents have a corner on 25-year-old female PhD students doing physics and then breaking wood planks with their hands.

[Flash; both the site and the videos take a while to load.]

Physics, bikinis and bubbles. A weird flash physics experiment. Strangly hypnotic. If the bikini clad woman gets stuck, just click and drag her.

The Physics Evolution

The Physics Evolution - a flash based history from the Institute of Physics in London. Clickable maps with timelines and short biographies of the main figures. It's a bit superficial, but a lot of fun.

Machine by SymmetryLab: fixed points, spinners, pistons, elastics, and connectors. Dig the frictionless world.

SymmetryLab's other stuff is noteworthy as well.
