FutureFarmers have released another thought provoking Flash site that is designed to make you think. Thsi time you get to play at running the country after a terrorist attack (where did they get that idea). Manage the budget, fight for oil and don't piss off big business (or they will assassinate you). FutureFarmers have a long history of making Flash content with a political message. Their They Rule site recently won a Net Excellence award from ARS Electronica, and their Texas Draw site has been featured here.

Congress Woman requests Flash game removal

Congress Woman requests Flash game removal on NewGrounds.com. The game is not being removed for its violent content, or depection of blood and gore. Instead it is the subject matter of the game that has raised the spectre of censorship.
The game in question, Kaboom!, is about suicide bombers, the object being to blow up as many people as possible.
Do you think that a game about a Palestinian captured by the Israeli army to act as a human shield would warrant the same type fo request?

Green Flash bashes Bush

Green Flash bashes Bush
Greenpeace is launching a contest to highlight the absurdity of the Bush positions on climate change and/or missile defence using Macromedia Flash. The contest, open to everyone and having no prize other than a link, runs through July 6th and should be almost as much fun as the 5k.

Friends of Bill W. Indeed...

Friends of Bill W. Indeed...
"For the past week I have read Jakob Nielsen's Flash alertbox over and over again and came to a startling revelation. It seems that Jakob got the title all-wrong. Flash is not 99% bad, as the usability guru says... Flash is 99% Proof, as in alcohol."

Macromedia Purchases Clue

Macromedia Purchases Clue
Looks like the folks at Macromedia have finally come around to the fact that Flash is getting a really bad usability rap. They have launched a token usability section on their site. I thought the four sites they picked as 'Usability examples' were very telling of their understanding of the issues. [via Flazoom]

Bake Cookies for your Visitors with Flash.

Bake Cookies for your Visitors with Flash. Another spot on editorial from the folks at Flazoom.com. You know, if Flash developers would practice what Flazoom has been preaching for the past few months, my IT department would never have banned SWF files from our firewall. Gahh...

Making Sure Usability 'Fitts' Flash

Making Sure Usability 'Fitts' Flash Another thought provoking article about making better Flash sites on the web. I have to admit, I consider myself a designer, but I had never heard of Fitt's Law until I read this piece. Oh, I thought this was a nice quote:
Chris' First Law of Usability: Usability makes everything easier except for the job of the Designer.
Amen to that!

Let web designers have Jakob Nielsen for usability guidance, we Flash designers have our own budding guru of usable Flash on the web at Flazoom.com. The guy behind Flazoom follows up his Cancer piece with some good guidelines for Flash on the web. The best link in the article goes here, where he asks you to find both uses of Flash on the page. I totally missed the first one, even when I knew what to look for. His use of Flash that just blew me away - hardly any animation, just usefullness. I'll stop cheering now...

A Cancer on the Web called Flash

A Cancer on the Web called Flash - The publisher of Flazoom.com has published a lengthy opinion/rant about evil Flash designers. I love how this guy publishes a Flash site about cool Flash sites, then publishes an editorial about why Flash is bad for the web. His commentary is dead on though, something that all Flash designers should think about.

Flasher's get thier own blog

Flasher's get thier own blog and I'm not talking about raincoats. A blog all about Flash sites - something I needed now that I have DSL. Tell me, do all Flash sites have to use techno or house music - what ever happened to polkas?
