Let's take a jaunt back, to the early days of DOS, from the early 1980s to early 1990s. Way back to IBM PC DOS 1.00 and 1.10. Back when Bill Gates wrote code. This was the time of avoiding donkeys on the road (gameplay), gorillas lobbing explosive bananas over skyscrapers (gameplay) and a hungry line named Nibbles [a variant of the older Snake game] (gameplay). So have at it! Gorillas recreated in Flash | Flash tribute to Gorillas, with updated graphics | Snake | two-player Nibbles | Radical Snake (now with curves) | Snake (like Radical Snake, but with landscape obstacles) | Nibblets (All 10 original levels from the QBasic game Nibbles, but with a new control system) | Snake/Nibbles for Vim (download) | Donkey (QBasic source code)

Friday Flash Fun: SkiFree Online

There are plenty of skiing games (many online), from dodging drunken skiers (flash, French) to the basic downhill skiing (java) but the grand-daddy of skiing games is SkiFree (previously), iteself based on the older Atari Skiing game. SkiiFree has been remade into a basic version built from SkiFree sprites and HTML Canvas, and the more complex flash version of the freestyle course, which includes the monster.

RUN! is a single-button flash game. Hold A to run, and let it go to slow down. There are three difficulty settings and five levels. The music, design and sfx are off-putting. You will probably either hate it or play it for about 3 hours, and then hate it. Also by the same author (authors?) is Rescue, a game about saving babies in a cave.

Fried Gibson. I've always thought you were safe in a house from lightning storms as long as you were off the land-line or computer. A Mississippi man's Gibson Les Paul got positively roasted while sitting in his home, in its case, leaning against a wall. That's a powerful bolt. Lots of gory photos here and in the auction linked above including a nice shot of some of the parts that exploded off of the guitar, some shooting like bullets through the case. Awesome! And it still held quite a bit of its value. Via " The lightning had struck the huge pine tree and traveled down the trunk until it reached the nails holding the trim to house. Then it jumped across through the nails, went through the drywall, and struck the top edge of the case. It then went into the case and down the neck of the guitar, vaporizing the strings, (remnants of which can still be seen on the fretboard and frets) also apparently traveling down the Truss rod inside the neck. It then blew out the last few frets on the fretboard above the end of the Truss rod before apparently melting the insides of the pickups. It then proceeded to explode some of the bridge saddles outward through the case."

Just a little too late for Flash Friday, it's Flash Doom 2D, a fairly solid side-scroller.via Aaron Williams. I will admit to being the first person who can be swayed to like something simply because it's Doom, but I really like the way the fifteen year-old graphics and sounds are put to use.

Friday fun: The revamped Globulos! The French suite of cute, simple mini-games -- posted before -- has in its latest incarnation finally got rid of its annoying 15-minute limit for non-paying users. Now, simply register for free and bounce those Globulos! (You could play as a guest, I guess, but that would just be lame now, wouldn't it. Blocky 2. Simple kiddie game with cutesy graphics and annoying sound effects, or addictive puzzle with surprising depth and strategy? Both? Either way, I've played it too often; now it's your turn. Like the straightforward instructions say, click and drag a rectangle containing four corners of the same color to release all the blocks within the rectangle. All smilies within the rectangle are released, as are any bombs and hourglasses. Release all the smilies before time expires to pass the level. Pro Tips:

- Releasing bombs is mandatory - clear them before the time expires (or release all the smilies before the bomb explodes), or the level is over. - Releasing hourglasses gets you more time to pass the level, so they're very helpful but not required. - Bombs and hourglasses, unlike the smilies, drop down when blocks are cleared beneath them, so if they happen to be momentarily inaccessible they can be moved to an easier location to clear. - If you get stuck and can't see any moves, the game will eventually show you one - although it may not be the best possible move. - In the uncommon event there are no more possible moves, the blocks will reset, so keep clearing rectangles even if your current position seems unwinnable. - As the levels increase, they do get generally harder, but not obscenely so. Some of the higher levels only have two colors, so don't worry about the number of colors constantly increasing.

Finally, what kicks up the addictiveness factor is that even when you lose a level you can start over at the highest level you have reached - so, it can either be approached as a game (try to get the highest score possible by starting over at level 1 each time) or as a puzzle (keep at it until you pass all 49 levels).

Casual Collective has been linked before[Previously, and Previously-er], but they have some more recent, well-crafted games. Get Smart Control Defense is a tower defense style game. Yes, it's sponsored by the movie, but it's not particularly bad about bludgeoning you with ads. Attack of the Buggles is a totally different style of game, where manual dexterity is king. You play a lone gray buggle, collecting blue boxes to boost your score while avoiding the red buggles, which increase in number as you collect more boxes. There is a time-slowing mechanic, and, even more satisfying, a periodic green buggle that allows you to take revenge on those nasty reds. Other single player games include: Desktop Armada Missions Flash Element TD and Flash Element TD 2 Registration is not required to play any of the single player games. To play multi-player games, you can register for free. If you want to play the currently-in-beta Buggle Stars, you must pay to upgrade your registered account.

Push the crates off the platform. Hurry!

Friday Flash Fun: Caravaneer is a game where you are a caravan leader in a post-apocalyptic world where towns and cities have formed around oases in the desert. You are one of the free marketeers that supply these towns with goods they need and buy the goods they produce. Your uncle has just died, leaving you a donkey, a rifle and some bullets, and $1000. Supply and demand are your friends and robbers are your enemy. This is a fairly complicated but ultimately fun game.
