Along with a career retrospective, the V&A Museum in London will publish an extensive photo book covering Bowie's career to date. Graphic design studio Barnbrook has designed the 'David Bowie is' book which accompanies the V&A's exhibition of the same name. The book is the first ever to be produced with full access to the David Bowie. "Drawing inspiration from songs, costumes, films, portraits, landmarks and more, we created a set of graphic elements to use throughout the book," says Abbott. "These are used as background textures and in graphic juxtapositions to introduce a playful, pop sensibility" Although standard copies will be available from the V& A shop, particularly avid collectors can buy one of the 500 limited edition prints on pre-order. Although at £395 per copy you'd have to be a big Bowie fan. The non-limited edition version of the book comes in cloth bound hardback edition and retails for a much more reasonable £30.00 "The Collector's Special Edition will be clothbound and feature a lithographic print signed by David Bowie himself and bound into the book. Each edition will be numbered, cased in Perspex and handfinished. Only 500 copies will be printed. Priced at £395, DAVID BOWIE IS Collector's Special Edition will be published on 23rd March" The 'David Bowie is' exhibition will run from 23rd March until the 11th August 2013 at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London [UK] A specialised font called 'Albertus' was designed by Barnbrook for the book. Barnbrook are known for their font creation and typography and have been mentioned on Metafilter previously.

Courier Prime , a new, updated, better-looking and free (beer and speech) version of Courier has been released. It's been designed for screen plays but very much suitable for other uses, including documents, the web and mobile applications. But like screenplay writers, software developers have a very special need for monospace fonts. I've always had a love / hate relationship with this font, and I'm excited to see it getting some updated love. I expect those who look at monospace fonts all day will be excited as well.

Quivera, a fairly complete Unicode font

"Here is Quivira, a free TrueType font that contains 10,000 characters. If you have it installed, you can read this message (unless you're using Chrome)." Another font to check for more Unicode characters is GNU Freefont (thanks LogicalDash). There are lots of fonts with lots of styles of characters, but very few of them bother to define glyphs for much of the vast Unicode range, which contains tens of thousands of characters. Most of these are for language support, but there are a lot of symbols and even some alternate Roman alphabets up in there. Windows and OSX install a few fonts that cover some of that range, and if you install foregin language support or MS Office you get some more. However, none of these match the extent of Quivira. There also exists a "Last Resort" font, supplied by Apple to the Unicode Consortium, that offers placeholder glyphs for many characters. When a modern web browser displays a Unicode character that the current font has no glyph for, it checks the installed fonts and looks for one that does offer support. If it finds one, it'll substitute the proper glyph; if not, most browsers will display a hollow square or rectangle, like so: ⬜. Firefox will display instead a gray box that contains the hexadecimal code of the missing glyph. (Exception: this doesn't appear to be true of Chrome as of December 10, 2011. I have tested this behavior on Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Opera on Windows, and Firefox and Safari on OSX.) dunkadunc pointed me to a free utility that Microsoft distributes, the Keyboard Layout Creator, that can not only be used to create alternate keymaps that use these characters, but can even create install programs to distribute them to other users! That was what I used to create the fancy characters in the FPP. Want to test your browser font support? Here are some special characters to try out.
