Making Shoes by Hand

Shoemaking (the job of a cordwainer) is a very particular blend of artistry and science. Here are some masters at work: Emiko Matsuda at Foster & Son; artisans at Saint Crispin's; and at Paul Parkman. [more inside]

Like my new shoes?

"Humans are playing God by physically and metaphorically perfecting themselves." Do these shoes "inflict a new beauty standard"?

Stepping Out

obsessedwithshoes is just that, including a brief history of designer shoes. Shoerazzi is another.
If these are too modern you can always check out Footwear of the Middle Ages.

These shoes rule. These shoes suck.

How you'll wear shoes in the future... "You start with a 'bone': the made-to-measure core of the shoe that cradles your foot. You cover the bone with one of many 'skins,' the shell and sole of the shoe that creates the look everyone else sees."

If the shoe fits

Feet Me. Celebrity shoes live onstage: from assertive Beastie Boys and PJ Harvey to sporty Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Neil Young, from old skool Claudio Abbado and Nick Cave to minimalist, shoeless David Bowie.

Punitive shoes - cruel beauty

Punitive shoes - cruel shoes are nothing new. From 1000 years of lily-footed Chinese concubines to Renaissance Venetian courtesans, footwear has migrated from the sex trade to more popular and mainstream culture. Foot fetishists throughout the centuries have endured painful training and disfigurement for notions of eroticism and sexy feet. For those who want the sex without the pain, there's always some rather delightfully erotic socks.

The next fad after scooters?

The next fad after scooters? I was walking through NYC when I first saw a kid skating along in a pair of shoes. I just saw them for the first time advertised in a flyer I got in the mail for Dick's Sports. I can't seem to find too many links for them other than this one. Anyone tried these out?
