It's Friday somewhere, right?

Friday Flash Fun: Ending, a hybrid of roguelike and puzzle game, or chess, or something. Maybe "it's like turn-based Gauntlet" would be a good description? There's an on-your-phone version if you're willing to spend a buck, too. DANGER: Very addictive to certain types. You've been warned.

But won't you think of the koopas?

PETA's latest public target is Super Mario 3D Land, specifically Mario's use of the tanooki suit, which PETA claim signify the wearing of a tanuki skin. To raise awareness, PETA had a little flash game made: Mario Kills Tanooki (warning: cartoon blood and gore), in which you play a skinless Tanuki trying to get your skin back from Mario (YT, 1:19 - slightly stuttery gameplay video). But as this Kotaku article points out, PETA's outrage is "an epic culture misunderstanding," overlooking the long, cultural history of the shape-shifting trickster. Nintendo's quick response: "Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games," that are "lighthearted and whimsical transformations." PETA clarifies: the graphic little game was just a joke.

So many buckets of blood

It's Happy Wheels, the motorcross physics flash game featuring buckets of blood, harpoons, and over-the-top violence, and where you can play as "Irresponsible Dad" or a host of other characters. And there is a level creator. Crazy enough that videos of people playing the game are among the most-viewed on YouTube. [Warning: As mentioned, buckets of blood]

Friday Flash Fun: Tesshi-e escape games

Friday Flash Fun: Japanese designer Tesshi-e makes beautiful, evocative, maddening escape games. Most recent among them is Escape Hotel 4. You may like to check into rooms 3, 2 or 1. Or perhaps you'd prefer to escape from the tatami room, the small bar, the hexagon room, the dome room or the restroom. Examine every item carefully, because nothing is quite as it seems. Expect a lot of lateral thinking and a sprinkling of maths. And before you leave, be sure to take one last look for the Happy Coin: Happy coin will bring happiness to you!! English-language reviews and walkthroughs are here.

Happy Friday Fun Flash(back) Day!

This year marks a decade of Strong Bad Emails, sent from Strong Bad's desk. Next to his computer sits a box of floppy discs, often displaying game titles. If you missed those titles, the detail-oriented Homestar Runner wiki (previously) provides game titles, summaries, and links. Many of the games are old computer games like Rise of the Dragon or Miner 2049er, and some titles are linked to Lord_Pall's revived Home of the Underdogs abandonware game archive. Other games have links to the Videlectrix catalog, where you can see box art and play some demos. Or you can go back to the Homestar Runner wiki, and go to the list of playable Videlectrix titles, like 50k Racewalker (play online) Polulation: Tire (play online) or Peasant's Quest (play online) (More previous stuff: Peasant's Quest and Where's An Egg?).

Next week, a first-person shooter based on FreeCell

Friday Flash Fun: Mamono Sweeper is Minesweeper with role-playing elements. A number of monsters with levels from 1 to 5 are hidden in the grid. Your task is to kill them all. When you click on a square with a monster, you battle against that monster until you or the monster is dead. If the monster is your level or below, you take no damage, but if it is of a higher level, you will get hurt, and possibly die. Empty squares show the sum of the levels of the monsters in all adjacent squares. You start out at level 1 with 10 hit points, and each monster you kill gives you experience points towards the next level. You cannot recover lost hit points. Use the A and D keys to mark squares. Good luck! [more inside]

Luke Paakh makes some lovely flash games

Particlasm is home to the browser games of Luke Paakh. He first caught my attention with fine space shoot'em-up Ether War but I also enjoyed his other games, shooter Ether Cannon, tree defending games Phoenix and Shen Long, puzzle game blue and petri dish action game Amoeba. His new game is my favorite. It's called William and Sly and it's a beautiful platformer is about an adorable fox who likes mushrooms and his quest to recharge some runestones with fairyflies.

Superstrong Baby Samurai Friday Flash Fun

Kinpira is a shockwave-game where you play a baby samurai out to rescue his mother. You run around a 3d landscape, all of which you can pick up and throw, once you grow strong enough to lift it. To start with you're picking up vases and other light items but soon enough you're lobbing houses around and eventually entire mountains. It's vaguely reminiscent of Mario 64 and Katamary Damacy.

Phriday Phlash Physics Phun

Physics Games is a collection of browser games that all have at least a rudimentary physics model. Some of the games I've enjoyed are Roly Poly Eliminator, Totem Destroyer 1 & 2, Demolition City and Red Ball. Most are fairly simple but some are complex, notably IncrediBots 1 & 2, which might as well require an engineering degree (slight hyperbole). My absolute favorite type of game on this site is the destroy-castles-with-a-trebuchet game, handsomely represented by not one but three games, Castle Clout, Castle Clout: Return of the King (no Tolkien connection) and Crush the Castle. All this is but a small sample of what's on offer.

Friday Flash Fun: Green Moon Lab! Manipulate gravity and momentum to get to the exit in this sleek, simple, Portal-esque physics puzzler. Contains twenty levels plus an unlockable challenge mode.
