The original fugitive

July 4, 2014, will mark the 60th anniversary of the murder of Marilyn Sheppard. Her husband, Sam Sheppard, a prominent doctor in the prosperous Cleveland suburb of Bay Village, Ohio, claimed that her killer was a "bushy-haired intruder." The trial at which he was convicted was a media spectacle that was at the time unrivaled; it inspired the 1960s TV series The Fugitive and the 1993 movie of the same name. What better way to mark the occasion than by exploring the complete collections now online courtesy of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, including the crime scene photos, the coroner's report, the 1954 trial transcript, and the masterful summation by F. Lee Bailey that won Doctor Sam an acquittal 12 years later?

The Old Man Next Door

"Saddam had his spider hole. Manson had Barker Ranch. For James “Whitey” Bulger, the anonymity of advanced age provided ample cover for him to hide out 16 years in Santa Monica, a stash of blood money stuffed in the walls and guns at the ready." The last days of America’s most wanted mobster.

Sharin' Morningstar Keenan. Please remember that name.

For 30 years, an ex-con drifter from Saskatchewan named Dennis Melvyn Howe has eluded police in connection with the abduction, rape and murder of a 9 year old Toronto girl. In 2008, an Idaho man named Robert James Miller wrote two long, bizarre posts on the forum at unsolvedcanada.ca. He claimed to have identified Howe and turned him in after seeing a 1998 episode of America's Most Wanted. The FBI is now investigating the possibility that Miller himself is Dennis Melvyn Howe. Uncatchable

George Wright, America's most elusive fugitive, ran for forty years. He ran from the cops after escaping from prison. He ran from the feds after the most brazen hijacking in history. He ran from the authorities on three continents, hiding out and blending in wherever he went. It was a historic run—and now that it's over, he might just pull off the greatest escape of all.

The Hipster Grifter

Kari Ferrell is on Salt Lake City's Most Wanted List. Apparently Ms. Ferrell has moved from Utah to New York and has been hanging out with the hipsters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Within the space of a half-hour, Ms. Ferrell was peppering him with questions about his sexual history—how many women he’d slept with and so on. “She was coming on to me, and I was super into it for the first part of it,” he said. “I realized I could have fun after work—but then I was like, ‘Let me check this girl out.’”

Clones and Kidnapped Mormons

When the publicity hit that a South Korean cloning lab duplicated 5 copies of Californian Bernann McKinney's late pitbull Booger from a piece of the dog's ear tissue, people all over the UK said Bernann McKinney looks very similar [slightly NSFW] to the infamous fugitive Joyce McKinney who has been on the lam for 30 years for kidnapping and raping a Mormon.
