The Red Cross has a decade-long pattern of using local crises to raise funds, and then to spend those funds on other things. The donors had thought their money would go to help specific victims, and sometimes up to 80% would be diverted to other causes. I think this is wrong.

If you try the voluntary contributions model, be ready to take some flak. Steve Outing of content-exchange.com talks about his recent "pledge drive." Mostly self-evident conclusions, but more grist for the mill.

Why? Story talks about stupid dot-com ideas who are having trouble getting funding. But somehow this ugly site burns through $50,000/month. How? Why can't someone give me some of that cash?
