With the recent release of the new instalment of first-person shooter goliath Call of Duty, Activision is poised to make another cool gazillion dollars or so. In fact, the game is popular with many gamers except for one significant group -- the professional ones: "The new games can bring all kinds of changes. Guns fire differently. The physics of the world have been tweaked. This makes it challenging and fun for casual players, but it’s a nightmare scenario for pros. The most important thing for professionals is to be able to practice and play the same game, with the same rules, for years and years to hone their skills. (Imagine if they completely changed the rules of Major League Baseball every year, using different balls, spacing the bases further apart, adding a fourth outfielder.)"

Read past the standard collection of academics, and the final author credited is... the FoldIt multiplayer online gaming community. Even though most of them had no biochemistry experience, the human players of FoldIt turned out to be better at identifying three-dimensional protein structure patterns than the algorithms of Rosetta@Home. Choice of Broadsides is a choose-your-own-adventure game set in an alternate 19th Century world that is much like our own, where Albion and Gaul fight for naval supremacy. You can choose to be a gentleman in a standard patriarchal society, or a gentlewoman in a matriarchal one. Later on in the game you can choose your sexual orientation. Originally there were no options for a same-sex relationship, but after demands from players, it was added in. Spoilers below the cut. In the original you could become friends with a Gaulish officer named Villeneuve but players wanted so much more. After some further thought, Choice of Games decided to add in some nights of passion between the protagonist and Villeneuve. Last night at the Gaylord National hotel across the Potomac from Washington, DC, a strange confluence of events occurred. In one of the large conference rooms, Family Life was holding a Christian-centered marriage enrichment conference. Across the hotel in the main ballroom, a large group of medium- and high-ranking officers and enlisted personnel from all five branches of the military gathered for the annual Wallow of the Military Order of the Carabao, an organization apparently dedicated to "fellowship" (i.e., hooch) and the creation of esprit de corps (mainly, so far as I can tell, by mocking the really high-ranking brass, military contractors and the usual military and political nonsense). Taking over the rest of the hotel were the costumed hordes of Katsucon, an eclectic convention of anime fans, cosplay enthusiasts and gamers. Folks with seven-foot-long battle-axes and odd-looking firearms filled all the nooks and crannies of the hotel's main atrium; the TVs in the sports bar were all showing anime, and the casual spectator was treated to a bizarre crossroads of modern American culture. (Some links mildly NSFW) Maryland retirees on Rascals scooting past Master Sergeants with sleeves full of chevrons and battalions of costumed, well, I'm not sure what-all. It was, in short, a total mind-fuck. Great fun.

Perennial MeFi favourite Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, the behatted ex-pat brit best known for the bitingly sarcastic game reviews in Zero Punctuation (previously on MeFi) has a new project... ...and some friends, apparently. Teaming up with Guy "Yug" Blomberg and Matt "Matt" Burgess of the AustralianGamer podcast (upon which Yahtzee has previously been a guest), the three Australian-based game lovers have produced GameDamage, a pilot episode of a game review- preview- and humour- show. More ambitious than the usual 5-minute video podcast, the pilot runs as a half-hour TV magazine show format ranging from on-the-sofa interaction between the three hosts, cutaway pre-recorded monologues, skits (of varying quality, to be honest) and a grand prize* competition... The makers have made it clear that this is not "Zero Punctuation TV", nor do they have any desire to make it so, but are instead going for a wider web-based or even true TV audience, if the pilot drums up enough interest. *For certain values of "Grand Prize", that is...

This was not a triumph. I'm making a note here. Epic fail. It's hard to overstate my disappointment. Nintendo. They do what they must at E3 because they can. For the good of all casual gamers except the ones who are hardcore. But there is no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of new games. And the science gets done, and you make some neat pheripheral add-ons for the people who own a Wii.

Sex & Games Finally, a place that seems to discuss sexuality in videogames as an adult topic. Indicates: There's going to be new levels, new maps, new everything after the game is out, making the purchase fully worth your $50.
True Meaning: We'll fix the game breaking bug about 3 weeks after the game's out, hope you guys aren't on 56K because it'll be a 186 MB patch. Also, hopefully this game will have some devoted mod/map makers, because the publisher isn't going to release shit. But there are some cool wallpapers to download!

Deaf Gamers is a terrific resource containing electronic game reviews with the hearing-impaired in mind. Digging a little deeper, I found a still-in-work but promising Gamers With Disabilites FAQ hosted by Gone Gold. We all love to play games and the resources contained herein will hopefully help us all play better. Any other resources out there that you'd like to share?
