Did Gauguin Cut Off van Gogh's Ear? According to
a new book by two German art historians,
van Gogh did not slice off his left ear in a fit of madness and drunkenness in Arles in December 1888. His ear was severed by a sword wielded by his friend, the painter, Paul Gauguin, in a drunken row over a woman called Rachel and the true nature of art.

Zoom in to brush-stroke level detail of the masters at the
World's First HD Online Art Exhibition.
At SXSW 2009, France's
Zoomorama showed off its latest collaboration with
Bridgeman Art Library. So far the collection features the work of only three artists, but for those of us who like to make museum security nervous by getting really close, the results are pretty amazing, and the implications for future exhibitions are exciting.

Gauguin the one who cut off Van Gogh's ear? Favorite line: "When Gauguin, then aged 40 - and still the only other colony member - announced one evening his intention to leave, Van Gogh, 35, was livid. They appear to have had a blazing row, fuelled by absinthe and other alcohol."
Sounds like an episode of "Cops," only in 1888.
