At the 17th annual Webby Awards, Steve Wilhite accepted a lifetime achievement award for the creation of the .gif format. During his acceptance speech, he reiterated his stance: It's pronounced "JIF", not "GIF". The pronunciation of gif (previously) has followers in both camps, with contrarians to Wilhite coming from as high up as the White House. Luckily for both sides, there are many independents to woo as today Public Policy Polling released their latest poll on the issue, finding "41% of voters in the state go with 'gif' to just 17% with 'jif.' 42% of voters have no opinion though so there's still some room for the jif movement to grow."

It contended for this crown with the likes of "YOLO," "superstorm," and "nomophobia." GIFCTRL is a Tumblr that allows you to control a GIF file's playback with your mouse. Move your mouse left or right to control the direction of playback; click to change GIFs. The slow-motion cymbal hit is great intro! The skateboard GIF is also well-executed. Moving your cursor to the edge of the frame to "skip" within the GIF also results in some interesting effects. There is also a "Add Your Own" link, though it is temporarily down. :(

This week, tumblr has become the birthplace of a new format of gif that offers a sense of 3-dimensionality. And the gifcrafters have really taken off... (MLTP - multi-link tumblr post) Who to credit for this innovation? In many ways, we can thank tumblr's occasionally dysfunctional self. Due to the website's image size restrictions (previously 500 mb per image, now 1Mb), fans had previously split a larger gif into multiple images in order to skirt the limitations while still managing to upload a high-quality image. But the introduction of those white bars allowed some clever tumblr user to trick the eye, and once people caught on it's only gotten better. Gifcrafters are bending the fourth wall and using restriction as a way to enhance their creations. It's all part of tumblr's continuing trend of revitalizing the gif format.
