"40 years ago, in millions of living room across the British Isles, a strange alien creature was beamed on to our television screens. With bright red hair and multicolored spacesuit, his unearthly appearance shocked the nation. But for many teenagers who experienced this televisual visitation, he would change their lives forever." Jarvis Cocker narrates the BBC Four documentary, David Bowie -- The Story of Ziggy Stardust

Hanoi Rocks, Helsinki 1981.
A year when they played 102 gigs, almost all in small dance halls deep in Finland. They were ready, even if their audience wasn't.
For british drummer Razzle, they looked like a band
which he wanted to belong to.
In next few years they caused chaos in Bombay, got spitted upon at Wailing Wall in Jerusalem because of indecent make up and hair, went big in Japan and had good gigs in London
November 1984, they were ready to conquer America. After Mike twisted his ankle on a bottle broken by Andy on stage in Syracuse, a few gigs got cancelled and instead the band accepted invitation from L.A. scene to party with Mötley Crüe. In December 9th, 1984, the party ran out of alcohol, so Vince Neil from Mötley Crüe and the drummer Razzle went to get more. The car crashed, immediatly killing Razzle. He was Dead by Christmas
, and the band broke in May 1985. [more inside]

The Bolan Tree
Today is the 25th Anniversary of the accident in which folk-singer turned glam pioneer Marc Bolan died. The tree
his car hit - driven by his partner, soul singer/producer Grace Jones
- has been purchased by a fan group [T-Rex Action Group], who have also contributed a bust sculpted by Canadian Jean Robillard
(with Quebec Government Cultural Attaché to Great Britain attending the unveiling today).
You may not think you know his music, but if you've seen Velvet Goldmine
or Billy Elliot
, watched the NBA Playoffs on TNT [using 'Get It On/Bang A Gong'
], or ever wondered where the ubiquitous '20th Century Boy'
[with the definitive power chord + squeal opening burst] comes from, now you know.
Marc inspired devotion in his fans, and respect from the likes of Bowie, the Damned and Billy Idol in his own lifetime - and influenced musicmakers like The Strokes & The Red Hot Chili Peppers [according to this article in The Philidelphia Enquirer
Dandy's in the Underworld, indeed.
