Keepin' it real

SNL veterans Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen and Bill Hader have teamed up for "Documentary Now!," a new IFC parody show premiering this Thursday with a send up of "Grey Gardens." IFC says: "Paying homage to everyone from the Maysles to Errol Morris, topics range from guerilla-style filmmakers who vastly underestimate the danger in exposing a drug cartel to a soft rock doc about a Chicago band's rise to fame with their hit album 'Catalina Breeze.'" Episode 2, a Vice parody, is free to watch online now.

Love Your Subjects

Albert Maysles, acclaimed documentary filmmaker and pioneer of “direct cinema,” has died at 88. Best known for the films Grey Gardens (previously) and Gimme Shelter (in which he captured the murder of 18 year-old Meredith Hunter by a Hell’s Angel at the Stones’ legendary 1969 Altamont Free Concert), Maysles (along with his brother David) created an astounding array of diverse documentary films including the Beatles first trip to the US and films about Christo, Orson Welles, Jessye Norman, and on and on. His most recent film, about NYC style maven Iris Apfel will be released on April 29th. A film community reflects. [more inside]

This weekend marks the U.S. premiere of the new HBO film Grey Gardens (starring Drew Barrymore as Little Edie and Jessica Lange as Big Edie) -- promo [video | 02:01] || 'Inside Grey Garden' [video | 03:33]. The film is based on the 1975 documentary filmed by the Maysles brothers, depicting the "true story of Mrs. Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie, the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis....[who] live[d] in a world of their own behind the towering privets that surround[ed] their decaying 28-room East Hampton mansion known as 'Grey Gardens.'" Grey Gardens -- The Return of the Marble Faun.

"The trouble is, he's madly in love with Edie." Not quite. Jerry Torre, the teenage handy man from Grey Gardens, describes his relationship with Little Edie Bouvier Beale as more of a "sibling rivalry." Be sure to check out Grey Gardens the musical and the remake that's in the works.
