I apologize in advance for linking to Cracked.com, internet leader in lame lists, but this 3-minute video sketch works for me: The Real Reason Guns Are Dangerous. Two "doods" take opposite stands about a found gun, while the sketch's writer makes them both look foolish. Hang in through the multiple-twist ending that makes it a web video bit that I didn't regret watching (so rare for me, I had to MetaFilter it). More a WC (wry chuckle) than a LOL.

Give it up for The Cramps and The Gun Club. Two of the greatest bands to come out of the late 1970s/early 1980s punk scene, they (wikis here and here) shared a few things in common: guitarist Kid Congo Powers as well as a penchant for re-invigorating the raucous, carnal, primal spirit of American popular music--i.e. early garage rock and rockabilly (what the Cramps dubbed "psychobilly") and blues. Start with this screamer from The Cramps, and this blistering classic from the GC's first LP. &featureHere are some other great distractions and mischief making from these two legendary, seminal bands: Cramps--Garbage Man, Cramps--Goo Goo Muck, Live at Napa State Mental Hospital, Cramps--Devil w/Blue Dress/You Got Good Taste, Cramps--People Aint No Good + Interview, Bikini Girls w/Machine Guns,.....etc Gun Club--Preachin' the Blues, Gun Club--Sex Beat, Gun Club--My Dreams, Gun Club--Moonlight Motel, Ghost on the Highway trailer, Gun Club--The Lie,......etc

What happens when a US President declares war on a concept? In 1964, Canadian photojournalist Hugh O'Connor traveled to eastern Kentucky to document the battlefields of Lyndon Johnson's war on poverty and was shot for trespassing. The incident is the subject of a wonderful documentary, Stranger with a Camera by filmmaker Elizabeth Barrett, produced by Appalshop, a non-profit organization in Whitesburg, Kentucky, that works with local artists to promote self-representation in media and the expediency of culture to counteract a stagnating local economy. Makes you think twice about nostalgic representations of poor Appalachian coal miners plucking their banjo strings in the hollers, doesn't it?

Like a YouTube for soldiers in the Middle East, this site boasts lots of large explosions, night vision footage, dawn raids, night-time firefights, desert shootouts, and convoy ambushes. There is one film of a failed IED that is breathtaking. Astonishing movies, whether you're for or against the war. Some of the films made me think of some First Person Shooters I've played, namely the latest Call of Duty, which in all likelihood took inspiration from these films, the way a game like Kane & Lynch took inspiration from Michael Mann's Heat.
