One of those inevitable year-end traditions is Lake Superior State University's List of Banished Words
, led this year by the currently ubiquitous "Fiscal Cliff"
, followed by the related political/economic shorthand "Kick the Can Down the Road"
. Of course, "YOLO"
is on the list (as I predicted
), along with "Double Down"
(surprisingly NOT in reference to the KFC menu item
), "Job Creators"
, "Spoiler Alert"
, "Bucket List"
(didn't Mike Myers kill that word in 2008?
), the marketing-speak "Superfood"
, the twitter-driven verbed noun "Trending"
, the oxymoronic "Boneless Wings"
and this year's pick for 'word that has lost all meaning': "Passionate"
. Of course, Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV, an acronym not yet banned, but give it time...)

"For the progress of humanity, work alone is not adequate, but the work should be associated with love, compassion, right conduct, truthfulness and sympathy. Without the above qualities, selfless service cannot be performed."
On Sunday morning
, Indian guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba passed away.
He leaves behind a massive empire
, several million mourning devotees worldwide,
an extensive religious philosophy
, a great deal of controversy
and a legacy of large-scale philanthropic projects in India, including free hospitals and mobile medical facilities
, a free university and schools,
and other efforts which included supplying clean water
to hundreds of rural villages. [more inside]

An American Sadhu
- A seeking of holiness, resulting in disillusionment and abandonment. A very good read about one man's experience meeting a guru and his disciple, and ultimately coming full circle to "you get the guru you deserve".

Let's see if mefites like Jeff Cooper
's list better than Heinlein's
What should a young male of 21 know, and what should he be able to do?
There are no conclusive answers to those questions, but they are certainly worth asking. A young man should know how this country is run and how it got that way...A young man should be computer literate and, moreover, should know Hemingway from James Joyce. He should know how to drive a car well... He should know how to shoot well. He should know elementary geography, both worldwide and local. He should have a cursory knowledge of both zoology and botany. He should know the fundamentals of agriculture and corporate economy... He should know how to manage a motorcycle. He should be comfortable in at least one foreign language, more if appropriate to his background... These things should be accomplished before a son leaves his father's household.

Sikh Words Of Wisdom.
If, from a Western perspective, there is one Cinderella among Eastern religions, one undiscovered gem waiting to be polished and admired by people outside the South Asian religious culture, it is the Sikh faith – in particular, the poetry of the Sikh Gurus. (From BBC.)
