Reminds our kid of Moroder

While the clubs of London are rocking to Lady Gaga and Paul Van Dyk, the dancefloor sounds of the capital are shunned in the north-west of England. Why? Because a whole generation of dance music fans are putting a donk on it. This documentary aims to find out why this genre of fast MC-led hardcore is so popular in one corner of the country whilst being completely unknown in others. (This is what my home town basically sounds like, by the way.)
(I no longer live there.)

Ladyless porn for Ladies

Some gals like gay (male) porn [mildly NSFW]. But there's not much agreement on how or why. When film scholar Linda Williams published a 10th-anniversary edition of her book, Hard Core: Power, Pleasure and the "Frenzy of the Visible,", she regretted not daring to include porn stills, refusing to write about gay porn because she was straight, and not talking about her own bodily reactions to a genre of film that is so dedicated to quickening the body. She made good in the epilogue that was added to this 2nd edition, including images, discussion of a wide array of queer porn, and a surprising admission: the films that "moved" her the most were the gay porn flicks.

Since then, the internet has informed women like Williams that they're not alone. The phenomenon of women—lesbian, bi, straight and queer—watching gay male porn has been the subject of advice columns, dense psychoanalytic film theory, and freewheeling dialogues on neo-hedonist mythology as it pertains to gay buttseks and the ladeez [VERY NSFW].

Whatever theoretical explanation you have for it, HotMoviesForHer.com [Pretty NSFW-ish] is there to meet all your gay-porn-for-women needs, including a dedicated gay porn review column [NSFW, fer sure], whose (female) contributors evince a frank pleasure in gay skin flicks of all sorts.

Rat Sound, the original punk rock sound company

Rat Sound Systems is the original punk rock sound company. Started in LA in the early 80s, it was a stalwart of the early LA punk scene (posters: it did happen). Starting in the 1990s, Rat Sound has been supplying sound for some of rock's biggest acts. They even went corporate, with a client list including Paris Hilton.

Since May 2006, founder Dave Rat, who mixes the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the audience, has been keeping a tour blog. Those of you who (like me) are interested in audio nerdery may be interested in the Sound nerd speak section of Dave's blog. (e.g. drum fills, subs, input lists, amplifiers, the Grateful Dead's wall of sound)

You may also read about the technical evolution of sound systems, from humble beginning to the Rat Trap 5 cabinet of the 1990s and the L-Acoustics V-DOSC and Microwedge of today.
How To Scream for Metal, Hardcore & Screamo

Learning to scream safely as a metal, hardcore or screamo vocalist can "take approximately a year", apparently. Handy tips offered here include "practice screaming into a pillow", and "scream along with music, especially songs in which screaming is already taking place." Bizarrely comprehensive, and probably useful, if you're into, uh, screaming.

New York Magazine published an article about the hardcore punk scene back in May of 1986, written by future best-selling author Peter Blauner. It was the story of two girls. One, 16-year old Becca, rose from the gutter to be near the stars. The other, Natalie, a grizzled veteran at 20, had to fight to keep her status as punk queen. Like with everything else in those days, it ended up on Donahue (clips from the episode, not the whole show). The band most featured in the article, Murphy's Law, is still a pogoing concern.

I haven't checked out all the videos yet, so you're on your own there.

Old Grandma Hardcore. "This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her..." A 22-year-old man blogs about his grandmother's video game obsession.

Local Chaos

Local Chaos. In the early 1980's, Ann Arbor, Michigan had a small, but thriving

hardcore/skate scene. At the time, the scene was documented in a 'zine called

Local

Chaos by a guy named Wes and his friends. But the 80's faded, as did the

scene and the 'zine, and only the memories were left.
Then, a couple of years ago, Wes created a site

dedicated to Local Chaos, and the scene of yore. In the wake of the site going

live, several of the bands have gotten back together and even played some live

shows. If you've ever wondered what the bald youth of 80's hardcore would look

like playing at 40, then check out the music

page for current photos, and video clips, of legendary locals like Ground

Zero, The

State, and arguably Ann Arbor's longest-running punk act, The Cult Heroes. The sCrapbook features a

trove of old interviews, photos, and odds and ends. This is a great look back

at

the Ann Arbor hardcore/skate scene in the 80's.
Punk's not dead!

Do you remember Hüsker Dü? No, not that Husker Du, this one. This site contains one of the most complete collections of guitar tabs I have ever seen for any band. It might even exceed my previous favorite band site, Swervedriver.com, if not in flash, then in content. The owner of the site seems to be more of a Grant Hart fan than a Bob Mould fan, as there are tabs for most of Hart's solo stuff and for Nova Mob, but only a smattering of Mould tunes and none for Sugar. There is also, suprisingly, a tab of the Posies' excellent song (and loving tribute to the Huskers) "Grant Hart".

Hardcore band Bleeding Through emerged relatively unscathed (video) after hitting black ice on a Utah interstate and nearly taking out two state troopers. On Trustkill Records, the band has had to cancel their tour. Can't wait for the music video, guys!
