Vimeo has run out of disk space...

Vimeo just announced they will delete your original source files if you are a basic (=free) user. Only the compressed and encoded versions will remain unless you buy the $60/year "plus" membership. Deletions will begin August 1st. From their blog: "Starting August 1st, basic accounts' original source files will be stored for one week from the upload date, after which they will be removed." (...) "Original file storage of every file for every user is a massive cost, and we have noticed that only a very small set of users actually ever download their own files. We want to keep original file storage around as a feature for people who use it, but we can't continue to do it for everybody."

Taking features away from your established userbase is usually a bad idea but the vimeo guys do not have a reputation for being anything other than a bunch of nice folks and I'll give them credit for sending out a pretty clear email alerting users to this change today. Still - this rather drastic change makes me wonder. Chris Anderson was not available for comment.

American Verse Project

American Verse Project is assembling an electronic archive of volumes of American poetry. Most of the archive is made up of 19th century poetry, although a few 18th century and early 20th century texts are included. Notables Include: Edgar Allen Poe, Carl Sandburg, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson (Series [1], [2], [3]), Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), James Russell Lowell. The full text of each volume is being converted into digital form and coded in Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML) using the TEI Guidelines.(1) The volumes already online, which include books of poetry by a number of African-American and women poets, represent an interesting selection. In many cases, the texts selected are the only existing editions of the author's work.

Zoom in to brush-stroke level detail of the masters at the World's First HD Online Art Exhibition. At SXSW 2009, France's Zoomorama showed off its latest collaboration with Bridgeman Art Library. So far the collection features the work of only three artists, but for those of us who like to make museum security nervous by getting really close, the results are pretty amazing, and the implications for future exhibitions are exciting. [Flash]

Search me. Ezra liked foreign titles.

Des Imagistes is an online version of Ezra Pound's influential 1914 anthology of Imagist poetry, which includes work by Pound, James Joyce, H. D., and William Carlos Williams. The anthology was placed online, apparently for the first time, by students at MIT. For those who prefer the look and feel of an old book, it is also available in convenient 21mb PDF format.

via Grand Text Auto. The quote in this post's title is from an amusing anecdote related on the anthology's wikipedia page.

sample videos for Nikon D90 and Canon 5D MkII

Exciting things are happening on the DSLR market: both the new Nikon D90 and Canon 5D MII can shoot video and now the first real footage is becoming available on the web: Chase Jarvis showcased the D90 a bit back and now Vincent Laforet demonstrates what the 5D MII is capable of (more on his blog, including behind-the-scenes footage)

Laforet predicts these cameras will change the landscape rather rapidly: You can use your prime and zoom lenses (...) with it - and shoot wide open… so you can shoot films with fisheye lenses, 50mm 1.2 as well as the 200mm f2 or 400mm 2.8 that you may already own… These cameras, while impressive at what they do, won't replace a real HD camera just yet. The Nikon seems to shoot 720p mono while the Canon 1080p manages in stereo and both can only shoot manual focus and for limited periods until they have to cool down. Still they do demonstrate where things are going.

The 11-part series makes the most of three remarkable camera technologies: shooting in total darkness, counter-vibration stabilizers, and 1000 fps sequences. Here are some clips of: penguins sliding, baboons swimming, and birds of paradise mating. Finally, here's footage from the original BBC version (with the much preferred David Attenborough narrating) that shows, for the first time,a snow leopard hunting in the wild.
