Moshers, Heavy Metal and Emergent Behaviour: The collective behaviour of moshers at heavy metal concerts is mathematically similar to a disordered 2D gas, say physicists. Silverberg and co gathered their data by examining videos of mosh pits on You Tube, such as this one and this one. These crowds contain anything from 100 to 100,000 people. After correcting for camera shake and distortions in perspective, they used particle image velicometry techniques to measure the collective motion of moshers. What they discovered was that the speed distribution of moshers closely matches that of molecules in a 2D gas at equilibrium. That’s curious. “Why does an inherently non-equilibrium system exhibit equilibrium characteristics?”, they ask.

War Pigs, live in Paris 1970. Slightly different lyrics, still heavier than the gods. This video captures a classic slab o' Sabbath during its transformation from 'satanic' (according to their record company) screed to anti-war anthem. Originally titled "Walpurgis," its initial couplet - which in "War Pigs" famously rhymes "masses" with "masses" - was instead "Witches at black masses/Bodies burning in red ashes." The equipment may have been rudimentary by today's standards, but damn they just killed it. Also: The impossibly slow and heavy Birmingham, 1970; the extra echoey Berlin, 1970; Montreaux, 1970, with Ozzy calling it "War Pigs," but singing the "Walpurgis" lyrics; and, just for comparison's sake, Italy, 1992, with the late Ronnie James Dio on (somewhat ad-libbed) vocals. Extra Bonus: Faith No More, reverential; and Metallica, impromptu.

Iraqi heavy metal? Sure, there's Acrassicauda. They're named after a scorpion. The Guardian has an informative article about them. There's been a movie made about them, which the New York Times has written about. Four members of the group, more recently based in Turkey, were seeking refugee status. Are they any good? I dunno, I guess so, but I''m not all that keen on metal, myself, so I'm not the best person to ask. Just go listen to 'em at their MySpace page.

An article by Johann Hari (a remarkable columnist) in today's Independent about the substantial Heavy Metal movement in the Muslim world inserted a flicker of hope into my normally gloomy outlook on the current situation. I know that in my youth I used Heavy Metal (old school) as a hammer to tell my parents, my teachers and the world in general that I was different from them and did not accept their rules, judgements and values. If that is happening in Tehran, Morocco, Egypt and Pakistan then I'm with the kids. Go Metalheads! Rock the Mullahs! Tarantist look and sound the part but the listing on their YouTube page of 'Home town - Tehran/Los Angeles' is a bit worrying. How the hell do they work that gig? I'm not sure I'm with Johann on the second half of the article though. I've come to enjoy Country in my dotage, but because it is nice, and sweet and melodic. Not for it's rebellious revolutionary fervour. Also, this man led me astray.

A few examples of high-quality re-creations of medieval armor. Much of this is created using historical techniques (youtube,) by men (slightly NSFW) who can only be called masters. But it ain't cheap. I've linked to the sites of only a few reenactment-grade armoring greats. There are many more, such as Ugo Serrano (warning, bad myspace page) and Chris Gilman, both of whom do work for movies. The answers to all your armoring questions available at The Armour Archive. [Note 1: The British "armour" is often used in the reenactment community to separate medieval "armour" from modern "armor" esp. in search engines.] [Note 2: Stay away from the armour archive off-topic forums if you value your faith in humanity.] This post inspired by comments to this thread which had me thinking "these people need to see some REAL armor."
