We all big brother now

The imminent Childish Gambino album 'Because the Internet" (as rumored, recorded at Chris Bosh's house) leaked over the weekend so the rapper/actor provided a streaming link to an iTunes site so that his fans could hear it while supporting him. The record features songs about: Oakland, World Star Hip Hop (in reaction to being shot at in Atlanta), being The Worst, and Death (so much death).

Flipping the Other

"Choruses of children evoking a crowded slum, humid jungles where Sri Lankan women bathe and wash their clothes, old Bimmers drifting in a Moroccan desert, the multiple limbs of a Hindu goddess stretching behind her, the austerity of areas long occupied by military, a digital print burqa [...] Welcome to Worldtown." -- Ayesha A. Siddiqi on the shamefully misrepresented "Pop Diaspora of M.I.A.", whose latest single from her new record Matangi is YALA (Flashing Lights Warning) [more inside]

Cuz we'll never be Legals

Guestlist’ (NSFW lyrics) is the brand new single from Berlin based Denitza Torodrove AKA DENA, released worldwide on 23rd November. The tongue and cheek lyrics offer a poignant juxtaposition to the political message of the single which addresses immigration control issues in her native Bulgaria. The video, also shot in her homeland...provides a suitable backdrop to DENA’s unique brand of pop, 90’s inspired hip-hop and Balkan beats. ‘Guestlist’ follows singles ‘Thin Rope’ and ‘Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools" which came out on French label Kitsune earlier this year, rapidly reaching more than 800,000 views on Youtube. cloud rap is sort of the chillest of raps

Depending on who you ask, Cloud Rap either is "the best shit happening right now" or it doesn't exist. If you ask Killscreen, the genre owes a lot to Japanese Role Playing Games. But according to Philly cloud-rapper Lushlife, "All Rap Is Cloud Rap." [more inside]

2cool4school

Last spring, Chance the Rapper got suspended from High School for 10 days. Faced with an ultimatum from his Dad to make real progress as an artist or drop it and get serious about his studies, Chance spent his suspension making the mixtape #10Day, a critical hit. Now, Chance has released another mixtape, Acid Rap, that delves even deeper (and with even more complex wordplay) into his favorite subjects: hallucinogens, nicotine addiction, the 90s, his mom, and the current dire situation of the south side of Chicago. Many critics are calling it a masterpiece. Download for free here, or listen here.

Knope we can!

Election year politics may be cruel, cynical and disheartening, but nerdy rapper Adam Warrock's new EP reminds us that there is one candidate whose message of positivity never wavers, even while it might be at odds with her name. [more inside]

Split Personality

Basehead, also known as dc Basehead and Basehead 2.0, is an American alternative hip hop group formed by Michael Ivey in suburban Maryland in 1992. Basehead's 1992 debut album, Play with Toys, was recorded at Ivey's home with various studio musicians (hits: Ode to My Favorite Beer, Not Over You, 2000 BC). Ivey formed a touring band for live performances, which contributed to Basehead's second album, Not in Kansas Anymore (which contained what some consider his best song, Split Personality). everything is international now

Root magazine analyzes "Blipsters" (with photo examples). In an era when Hip-hop is on the presidential I-pod (Atlantic Roundtable on Hip Hop) while more and more multiracial rock, hip-hop, and crossover acts are appearing on the scene, is mainstream culture ready to move beyond racial fashion dichotomies?
