Parents can no longer support their hipster children's lifestyle. Oh, the humanity. I realize that schadenfreude is a particularly ignoble emotional response, but how am I expected to control myself after reading: "...Luis Illades, an owner of the Urban Rustic Market and Cafe on North 12th Street, said he had seen a steady number of applicants, in their late 20s, who had never held paid jobs: They were interns at a modeling agency, for example, or worked at a college radio station. In some cases, applicants have stormed out of the market after hearing the job requirements. “They say, ‘You want me to work eight hours?’ ...."” [Yeah, yeah, I know. Schadenfreude is the entire point of the piece.]

Richard Myrle Buckley was too hip for the room. This most immaculately hip aristocrat translated the classics: Poe, Shakespeare, the Bible into Hip and left us all gassed, jonesing for more. Lord Buckley was a formative influence on monologists, poets, and performers from Whoopi Goldberg to Del Close (previously), and like the much anticipated movie about Close's life, 2009 should reveal the life of Lord Buckley through filmmaker Michael Monteleone's documentary, Too Hip For The Room: The Righteous Reign of Lord Buckley (.mov). Oliver Trager's book + rare tracks CD, Dig Infinity includes classics tracks with previously unreleased material framed by a Studs Terkel interview with the self-proclaimed Professor of Hipology. My first exposure to Buckley was growing up in Chicago where precious vinyl of Buckley still circulated: Hipsters, Flipsters, Finger Poppin' Daddies, Knock Me Your Lobes from RCA in 1955 led to this classic exchange on You Bet Your Life (YT). We've discussed fixed gear bicycles before. In the intervening years the cycling phenomena has taken on new proportions. While those early adopters, bike messengers, maybe a dying breed they leave behind a design that gained some respected proponents. Almost overnight the fixed gear bicycle attracted a certain type who found that the messenger-imparted street-cred, not to mention the low cost of entry, fit nicely with a hip aesthetic and do-it-yourself lifestyle. It wasn’t long after that amateur videos and music began to circulate celebrating, or perhaps embarrassing, the fixed gear culture. Though the movement hasn’t been without its terms of derision it has relentlessly grown. Now major manufacturers churn out off-the-shelf fixed gears and at least a few in the entertainment industry have capitalized on the craze. All this commodification has led some to speculate that high gas prices have made urban bicycle commuting more appealing to a wider audience. So perhaps the fixed gear, or at least its more user friendly single-speed version is here to stay...
