With the economic downturn and
a steady downward trend in family sizes,
the end of the McMansion could be at hand. Some people are
living in and
building tiny houses (
previously) to decrease their impact on the environment, while others can't afford more (or wish to own something small instead of paying off something big).
Sergio Santos saw his
small budget and limited space as a challenge (
gallery), maximizing his 77 square foot space as a bedroom, office, and mini-kitchen.
Claire Wolf lists the four pieces of living small: building, gadgeting, decorating, and coping. If these spaces are too small for you,
Dan Maginn suggest 900 square feet for a 2 bed, 2 bath house, and
outlines how to design your own small home (his tips: think "events" more than "rooms," and don't forget the cupboards and water heater closet).

Giant Concrete Caterpillar. Driving on I35 south out of Dallas to Austin, you pass through Italy, Texas, and on the side of the road is
Bruco, the Texas Italian Caterpillar, and the home of the
Monolithic Dome Institute, makers of fine
homes,
restaurants, and
churches. These
domes are
green
and
disaster resistant. (See
previous thread). They also can be
visually interesting. These domes are
concrete as opposed to
R. Buckminster Fuller's
Geodesic domes, such as
Epcot Center or the incredibly interesting
Eden Project.

The colour scheme throughout this bright, airy chalet is a light jade green. In outside rooms, like the sun-parlour, chairs and tables are of white plated cane. Here Hitler will read the home and foreign papers which his own air-pilot, Hansel Baur, brings him every day from Berlin before lunch. Homes & Gardens magazine

"e-filing" your land transactions - could it streamline a process that is quite cumbersome? 11 of the 21 counties in New Jersey are working to convert their current paper-based system of filings to an electronic format. Some say it would lower mortgage costs and time constraints because of the movement of paper. Some say it's a disaster waiting to happen. I think it would be an excellent move and would give NJ some first mover status (I think?) to be proud of.

Guardian piece which suggests the introduction of land-zoning to ensure that all the prime pieces of land aren't snapped up for luxury,
new build homes and are instead designated for affordable housing. With UK house prices on an
ever-upward trajectory, it's unlikely that developers would embrace such a move. At least, not when there are
masterpieces to
construct.
