Visual artist Nick Cave (not of The Bad Seeds) worked together for months with students across various departments of the University of North Texas to present Heard, a visual and musical burst of vibrancy based on Cave's childhood experiences of colouring in horses and being told by his mother: "It doesn’t matter if it’s pink. Go for a 1st-person ride at Rolex with Doug Payne and Running Order Here's a nifty window into the world of 3-day eventing; the triathlon of the equestrian sports world [Previously] beware, video maybe vertigo and/or habit forming; OP not held accountable for time spent down the rabbithole linking thru Doug's many other wonderful helmet-cam rides & analyses. Maybe speaking strictly for myself here, but nearly every horse-crazy teenage girl's dream is to someday make it to the Rolex 3-day event as a competitor. I have been to Rolex several times, merely as a spectator. The fences are terrifyingly huge. I believe Doug makes mention of this somewhere in his video analysis; he himself is 6'3" and cannot see over the "drop" elements from the low side. I'm extremely grateful to Doug for the time he has taken to put together this and his other XC helmet-cam videos. He does some very articulate analysis on this video (including explaining his mental error that confused the horse and caused the one mistake they had) thus providing internet horse junkies and others worldwide an unique insight into the sport, as well as a wonderful "ride-along" experience that we would not, or could not, ever experience for ourselves. Here is a bonus video that explains the back story of Running Order's development from a "weedy" failed steeplechaser to the talented, up and coming 4-star athlete he is today. as a teenager/young adult, I spent over a decade working my way up through the eventing ranks to Advanced; got all the way to a couple FEI 3-star events, then had a show jumping wreck that permanently spooked me out of competition. This stuff is not easy.

After three horses used in the production of Luck had to be euthanized due to injury, HBO decided to pull the plug on the horse racing drama. Perhaps for the first time since Eight Belles broke down following the running of the Kentucky Derby in 2008, the deaths and subsequent decision to cancel the show have again cast a national spotlight on the darker side of the US horse racing industry, a business “still mired in a culture of drugs and lax regulation and a fatal breakdown rate that remains far worse than in most of the world.”

Virtual Medieval Europe, a journey back in time through text and illustrations

If you'd like to know a bit about medieval life in Europe, History on the Net has some information on life in medieval times, prepared as educational summaries for students. If you'd like to know more, Medieval Life And Times has a broader scope, and the surface links often have a number of subsequent links to even more information on sub-topics. If you want even more specifics, here is a list of medieval occupations, some information on buying, selling and bartering in medieval times, and a history of horses in Europe. The occupations and bartering links are part of the Economics section of The Magic Jar project, "a magical item which gives glimpses of some other world." The site was put together as a part of The Crystal Obelisk project, a "virtual roleplaying soapbox" for hosting a variety of things for roleplaying games, like Don't Eat Them - A Guidebook to Companion and Work Animals (in which you can find the history of horses in Europe). The list of occupations came from various sources, including this alphabetical list of occupations (Archive.org view of a now-dead site), that has apparently become part of Geneaology Knowledgebase, though the Old Occupations list doesn't show up for me. History on the Net is a pretty broad site, too, and has been seen on the blue twice before, once on a post about various types of homes, and then on the marriages and reformation of Henry VIII.

"Once upon a time there was a girl who had 7 invisible horses. People thought she was crazy and that she in fact had 7 imaginary horses, but this was not the case. When autumn came the girl spent a whole day washing all her clothes. She hung them on a string in her garden to let the gentle autumn sun dry them. Out of nowhere, a terrible storm came and its fiercefull winds grabbed a hold of all her clothes and all seven horses (authors note: since they are invisible they obviously didn't weigh much). The girl was devestated and spent all autumn looking for each horse spread around the country, wrapped in her clothes."

Neville Bardos is a very cool horse. Actually, he was a pretty terrible racehorse. Australian Three-day Event rider Boyd Martin bought him off the truck to the glue factory for $850. Originally developed as horse trials for the military, three-day eventing combines dressage, cross-country and showjumping to test horses' obedience, fitness and stamina. It's the triathlon of Olympic equestrian sport. By 2009, glue factory reject Neville Bardos was a good enough event horse to win the Fair Hill CCI***, a United States Equestrian Federation championship event; in 2010 he placed fourth at Rolex Kentucky, the pinnacle of the sport. Then came the fire. There were eleven horses in Boyd Martin's barn at True Prospect Farm. Five made it out alive. Neville Bardos was the last to be saved; Boyd Martin and fellow Olympian Philip Dutton ran into the flames to save him. After they got Neville Bardos out, they could not save any more. Ariel, Cagney Herself, Call Me Ollie, Charla, Phantom Pursuit and Summer Breeze W all died. The five surviving horses were taken to New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Neville Bardos suffered serious smoke inhalation and burns on his oesophagus and lungs. He had been entered for the Burghley Horse Trials in the first weekend of September, but no one was sure he would even recover from his injuries. It takes three months to prepare a fit horse for a four-star three-day event. In June, Boyd Martin lost his beloved father in a cycling accident. Two weeks later his father-in-law died. Not his year, right? Not so fast. Neville Bardos came seventh at Burghley. I swear, if he makes it to the London Olympics, I am turning this post into a screenplay. Nev-Bard in intensive care. Nev-Bard, ballet dancer. Nev-Bard, cross-country machine. His groom tells the Burghley story. Boyd and Silva Martin's blog. Silva is a kickass dressage rider in her own right. It's okay to shed a tear.

Secretariat - The Movie opens next week in the US. A feminist or a Christian angle might wring some suspense out of one of the least underdoggy sports stories ever filmed, but at least it's an excuse watch Secretariat's three perfect Triple Crown races again. The Kentucky Derby, relentless come-from-behind classic. For a sense of the speed-- the unfortunate Sham, coming in two lengths behind, is also breaking the track record.
The unique backstretch run in the Preakness Stakes, may well be the fastest a horse has ever moved. If you watch one race, it should be the transcendent Belmont Stakes. With Inspirational Soundtrack! A fine stride-by-stride 15 minute documentary covering all three races was done a few years ago by CBS-- Pt 1, Pt 2), with interviews with many of the principals including Penny Chenery and Ron Turcotte. His phenomenal abilities may be explained by his freakish greyhound-like stride angle, and his giant mutant heart. 12-year-old Big Red, bombing around a field for the heck of it.

Commonwealth, schmommonwealth. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are on. Horse lovers the world over are enthralled by the high drama and hijinks in Lexington, Kentucky this week. Already there's been a controversial withdrawal following a travel-related mishap (on the very same flight hilariously previewed here.) In all the excitement, Eitan Beth-Halachmy, a "cowboy dressage" rider in the opening ceremony, seems to have burst a spleen. As expected, the Dutch took the gold medal in Dressage despite one of their team being disqualified with a horse bleeding from the mouth. Some point to training methods like rollkur, or hyperflexion, saying they are cruel and abusive. The FEI has banned rollkur; former advocates say that what they do is not rollkur, but "LDR" (long, deep and round.) Look at the lawsuits fly! In happier news, the gloriously named Nobby took the gold medal in the Endurance event. "He could go another 100 miles today if you wanted him to," rider Maria Mercedes Alvarez Ponton said of the 15-year-old bay Arab gelding. Still to come, the equestrian triathlon: Eventing! On the eve of competition, US team favorite Tipperary Liadhnan was another shock withdrawal, this time thanks to an unlucky bout of cellulitis. What made this especially frustrating was that his rider Kim Severson has worked wonders on his showjumping issues. Can the US still win with Karen O'Connor in Severson's place? O'Connor is the darling of the eventing-enthusiast crowd, but some say her horse Mandiba is no match for Theodore O'Connor, the mighty part-Shetland she rode until his untimely death... Urban Horsemen: Philadelphia

Once as a youngin, I got mad lost trying to drive home in Philadelphia and thought I saw a horse looking at me from a knocked out window of what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse. I wasn't hallucinating. Long before Smarty Jones made horses "cool" in the city, urban cowboys in North Philadelphia have been buying horses at auction and keeping them in neighborhood stables, or sometimes backyards (which is legal in Philadelphia). City government has been trying to reclaim and repurpose parts of the "ghetto" area that most of the stables are in and the SPCA has raided stables in the past. A non profit, The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club uses the urban cowboy pastime to steer young boys away from street violence. They are working with photographer Martha Camarillo, whose photographs have been featured in a Life Magazine article about the riders, on a documentary that is scheduled for release this year. (She previously released a book of Fletcher Street photographs.
