The Crystal Cube (parts 2, 3, and 4) [mlytp] Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie had another project before doing A Bit of Fry and Laurie. The BBC was not expecting scientific, but fake, documentary style by the two comedians, so it was canceled after the first episode. [wikipedia]

Before moving on to House (Laurie) and being bloody awesome (Fry), even before Jeeves and Wooster, but after Blackadder I think, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry appeared in an amazing sketch show called A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Fry, in particular, has a way of taking any bit of linguistic madness at all and turning it into something that sounds almost respectable.

Is Dr. Gregory House, a gleefully misanthropic diagnostician of infectious diseases (played by the endlessly brilliant Hugh Laurie), the modern-day counterpart of Sherlock Holmes? There's plenty of connections * to read into, starting most obviously with the play on words: Holmes is a homonym of "homes", which is a plural synonym of "house".
