From the bankruptcy beat:
Kerner Optical shut down. The original Industrial Light and Magic (in a building labeled "Kerner Optical" to hide from industry snoops and avid fans), the practical effects (in contrast to computer effects) shop became a department of a diversifying ILM, which sold it off in 2006. It struggled along on the margins of bankruptcy before filing for Chapter 11 early this year and closing for good in August, its final words a
bitter letter about an uncooperative creditor. The
Kerner Optical site (entirely in Flash) is still up, where you can see its credits (up through 2008) and view its demo reel.
Souvenir hounds and budding SFX shop owners can have a blast at the
liquidation auction, and bid on a
box of skulls, a
pizza oven,
studio props,
stage props,
leftover models, and tons of shop tools.

Industrial Light and Magic has released a new plugin to After Effects that may finally bridge the gap between DV post production and film post production. Of course,
DV Cameras are just the less expensive counterpart of their film brethren. With such technology at the hands of amateurs, does this mean the home camcorder will no longer be used for just remembering birthday parties? Will amateurs be able to finally express themselves in ways
only professionals have done in the past? This is certainly being set up as much a
revolution for the amateur artist as the web was.

I wouldn't normally post a job announcement URL here on MetaFilter, but this one is different because
it may be every young web jedi's dream. Industrial Light and Magic is looking for web and database people. Can you imagine the street cred you'll have when you get to build the pages for the SW movies and trailers months before anyone gets to see them? I wonder if Lucas would force you into some sort of solitude, so you wouldn't leak any juicy info
to others.
