Italian & German researchers have created a "neuro-chip" for linking computers with mammalian neurons (A NewScientist, LiveScience, MSN). They added neuron gluing proteins to the chip to attract the sodium pores, and genetically modified the neurons to add more sodium pores.
In the short term, the work is expected to aid the pharmaceutical industry in testing the effects of drugs on neurons, assist basic research into the workings of the brain, and perhaps help treat neurological disorders. In the long term, numerous sci-fi technologies are slightly closers, such as computers with living components, useful brain implants, and Beowulf clusters of humans.

So by 2006, tattoos and piercings are so mainstream that it's hard for a genuine bad-ass to stand out anymore. While some options still exist, for my money nothing beats embedding a set of brass knuckles directly under your skin.

Miss Plastic Surgery There is now a beauty contest in China where those who have had augmentation can compete for a prize. Will the losers end up on the Internet(s)?
This is more main stream with TV shows around the profession (Nip / Tuck). PLay the Nip/Tuck game.
No worries, reality TV is here for us so we can then we can compete to be cut up.

Brain implants 'read' monkey minds. (No, not that monkey mind.) A group of CalTech neuroscientists have been able to predict the actions of monkeys by observing neural activity in the parietal and premotor cortices related to planning and motivation (PDF.) Other research previously allowed monkeys to control a robotic arm with their minds; this observed the higher-level goal and value signals, and could lead to more natural thought-activated prosthetic devices for people with paralysis. Starts with an "S" and ends with "ne" and is used to fill breast implants... That's right, silicone is trying to make a comeback as the "it" choice for filling up those implants instead of saline. What's that? They're unsafe? There's a company out there that would like nothing better than to change your mind.

Won't somebody think of the children? Wired News reports that a
Mexican
company has launched a service
to implant RFID
verichips
(Technology That Cares)
into children as an anti-kidnapping device.
"The company envisions placing walk-through scanners -- similar
to metal-detector portals used in airports --
in malls, bus stations and other areas where a missing child may appear."
Similar plans have been
proposed
before by the UK's Kevin
"Captain Cyborg" Warwick, but while his plans to use the mobile phone
network are implausible, this method seems more feasible. So, why not
sign up to
get
chipped today!

Butt implants For the woman who asks "do these jeans make my ass look skinny?" As disconcerting as retouching in silicon can be, retouching with silicone is moreso.
Or if you're nostalgic for old-fashioned airbrushing, but want something more direct, you can just airbrush yourself.

Fitness experts say that you need to work out and eat right in order to have a shapely, firm, and impressive derriere. But who has time for that? Just get buttocks implants instead!

"...padded bras in my size did nothing for my chest but protect it from flying objects." One woman's humorous and touching story of her decision to get breast implants. For the record, I like boobs, but the idea of having pieces of plastic stuck under one's skin creeps me out no end. To implant or not to implant, that is the question....

Virtual light - "...the wires plug into Patient Alpha's head like a pair of headphones plug into a stereo. The actual connection is metallic and circular, like a common washer. So seamless is the integration that the skin appears to simply stop being skin and start being steel."
Cameras that jack into a blind man's brain, allowing him to 'see' may soon be here.

FDA has ruled that implantable microchips dont need to be regulated. It looks like, the Jacobs family can now have their VeriChips. Does anyone else think that some kind of regulations of these devices is called needed? (via GMSV).

How deflating..... I am aphalled at the statements of the girl and her mother that if someone has low esteem then breast implants are the way to improve both self image and success! As if breast size is the only factor in social standing and prosperity. *sigh* Obviously television, societal rhetoric and socialization of body image opinion has truly sunk to new lows.

If there's ever been a weirder contest prize than this one, I've never heard of it. Or a more offensive one, actually. I wonder how many women will enter without realizing they've done so?
