What Is Going on With the Accents in Game of Thrones? Gawker beanplates the accents used on-screen by the actors in Game of Thrones. Like most fantasy television shows, Game of Thrones is largely populated by English actors speaking with English accents. This is because Americans are still unconvinced that England is a real country, and associate English speech patterns with kings and magic and sorcery and frequent stabbings. But Game of Thrones takes its accents a step further: Its characters in speak in several different English accents, and often those accents correspond to to the real-world geography of Britain. Eddard Stark, the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, is played by Sheffield's own Sean Bean, sporting his native northern English accent. Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West, is played with a posh southern accent by the great Charles Dance. And so on. Generally speaking this is very cool (to nerdy Anglophile prisses, I mean. Not to me. I only like sports). It's a useful way for a dense, complicated series to quietly signal backgrounds, affiliations and alliances; it draws on pre-existing associations to quickly develop and define character; and it provides people on the internet with a new axis along which nitpicking can take place. It was a formal gala at the Americana Hotel, complete with a big band, kosher corned beef and green bagels." American-Irish-Jews still celebrate St. Patrick's Day: “It’s an American-Irish holiday, surely not Jewish. It has nothing to do with Jewish people. But I’m Irish, and I have a feeling for it.” Today, Ireland's Jewish community is working to preserve and explore its history and future in Ireland. Although there is a long Jewish history in Ireland, much of the Irish-Jewish diaspora can be traced back to a small population of Lithuanian Jews fleeing forced conscription in the Tzar's army in 1884. By 1904 there were at least 3,000 Jews in Ireland. Throughout March and April, 1904, an anti-semitic priest incited boycotts and targeted violence against Limerick's 170 Jews in what became known as the Limerick Pogrom.

We're all Irish

Perhaps the greatest Irish band in history. They came from Liverpool, a city with an Irish population so large that it's known as "The Real Capitol of Ireland," and with an accent, "Scouse," that betrays its Irish influence. There were four in the band, and three were of Irish descent. It started with John, the son of Alfred Lennon, an itinerant Merchant Seaman who was absent for much of John's life, and whose parents hailed from County Down. He formed a skiffle band with fellow students at the Quarry Bank school. The next to join was Paul, who has Irish ancestry on both sides of his family. Paul had a friend named George, then 14, who auditioned for the band, despite Paul thinking him too young. George was likewise Irish on both sides -- unsurprising, seeing as he shares a name with a famous Irish Republican arms runner. We should briefly mention the two who joined but did not remain. There was the Scottish-born bass player Stuart Sutcliffe, a friend of John's from art school who was the band's original guitarist, who died young of an aneurism, and the Madras-born drummer Pete Best, whose grandparents were Irish. But Pete was replaced, of course, by Richard, who everybody called Ringo, who knew of no Irish background. Aside from the tendency of the Irish to claim everybody who has a little Irish heritage as one of theirs, does it matter? Well, a case could be made that they sort of sound Irish. And, in interview, Paul explicitly credits the Irish for Liverpool's strong musical heritage. John Lennon found the influence of Irish and Scottish folk songs in the American music that inspired him. There's a nod to the band's Irish background in "A Hard Day's Night," which cast Irish actor Wilfrid Brambell as McCartney's grandfather, and has him tell a police officer "I am a soldier of the Republic." More than that, the three Beatles strongly identified as Irish. "We're all Irish," John Lennon declared when the band toured Ireland in 1963; it was no surprise, as a result, that this past year Yoko Ono declared "John ... sometimes considered himself 100% Irish." After the Beatles broke up, two of them made their heritage more explicit. Inspired by the Irish Republican movement (and especially the events of Bloody Sunday), both John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote songs drawn from their Irish backgrounds. Paul McCartney actually charted with the debut song by his band Wings, "Give Ireland Back to the Irish," which featured Northern Irish guitarist Henry McCullough. McCartney also authored a song called "The End Of The End," which he described as "taken from the Irish idea of a wake. They don't get morbid. They all just say, 'Ah, he's a great fellow. You want another drink?' And they tell each other jokes and things. And coming from Liverpool, which we sometimes describe as the capital of Ireland, I've always enjoyed that idea." In the meanwhile, Lennon wrote a much harsher response to sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, titled "Sunday Bloody Sunday." About the song, he said "if it's a choice between the IRA or the British army, I'm with the IRA. But if it's a choice between violence and non-violence, I'm with non-violence. So it's a very delicate line... " Lennon and Yoko Ono also authored a song titled "The Luck of the Irish," the proceeds of which he donated to Irish rersistence. Perhaps the most surprising of Lennon's Irish-inspired songs was "Woman is the Nigger of the World," a song he claimed was inspired by Irish revolutionary James Connolly, who has once said "the female is the slave of the slave." Lennon eventually told Rolling Stone that "I hope we're a nice old couple living off the coast of Ireland or something like that - looking at our scrapbook of madness." And, indeed, he eventually bought a retirement island off the West Coast of Ireland, which he owned until his untimely death at the hands of a deranged fan in 1980. What of Harrison? According to Damian Smyth, co-author of The Beatles and Ireland, "Of all The Beatles, it was George who had the strongest Irish connections by far." He continues "George had cousins living in Drumcondra [North Dublin] and he made a point of visiting them when they came over to play in 1963. But even before that, in the late forties and early fifties, the family would get the ferry from Liverpool to Dublin to stay with the cousins and go to places like Malahide Beach; I have photos of him there and [of him] walking down O’Connell Street with his mother. So there was a strong connection from the family point of view." Harrison would return to Ireland throughout his life. An early vacation with his soon-to-be-wife Pattie Boyd was to Ireland. When Harrison was the victim of a stabbing in 1999 (another deranged fan), it was to Ireland that he fled. Harrison's music didn't overtly draw from his Irish heritage, but he had a second career -- he produced films through his own company, HandMade Films. These included the great British crime film "The Long Good Friday," which includes IRA gun runners, Irish director Neil Jordan's Mona Lisa, the great comedy Withnail and I, including a memorable scene with Irish actor Daragh O'Malley, and The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne, a film about an Irish spinster. Harrison, alas, also died young. succumbing to cancer in 2001. Paul McCartney is still with us, of course. In fact, recently, he has agreed to fill in for an Irish-American rock and roller who died too young -- last night he filled in the Kurt Cobain role in a Nirvana reunion benefit for hurricane Sandy.

"Dead Bears" is a photographic collection by artist Michael Fortune documenting the regional Irish habit of erecting stuff animals wearing local Gaelic sporting colours as territorial markers. (These nailed-up teddies are very common on certain roads in Ireland, and will be left to decay through the years until they look utterly bedraggled.) The website offers an eclectic body of work, focusing primarily on aspects and oddities of rural Irish life and culture. A documentation of his granny's kitchen. "My Harry Potter Wand" used to discipline the dogs. Fortune has also done a lot of work documenting spoken Irish folklore, and quite a few of the videos are available online. One of these is a 2005 collection of Limerick schoolchildren telling local ghost stories: "The Banshee Lives in Handball Alley". You might require the version with subtitles.

"Over in Ireland, mention Chris ‘The Viper’ Tordoff of the Hardy Bucks, and everyone immediately thinks comedy. But when Tordoff’s mock-commentary of Olympic sailing went viral" (video, 3 1/2 min.) "most international media failed to get the joke." Often compared to the Canadian hit TV show Trailer Park Boys (previously here & here), Hardy Bucks is an Irish mockumentary TV show "set in a small town in West Ireland, following the misadventures of five hapless men down on their luck, trying to leave their backwards rural hometown and attempt to reach Galway to sample modern civilization". As a series of largely improvised webisodes, it went on to win the 2009 Storyland competition held by Irish national broadcaster RTÉ, which then commissioned nine TV episodes (two seasons) and a Xmas special. "The Hardy Bucks is based on the misadventures of four disaffected lads from the fictitious ‘Castletown’ in the backwaters of County Mayo, Ireland. Scheming, drinking, work-shy procrastinators, the Hardy Bucks are daft lads from the country – the epicentre of their universe – tormented by their nemesis and small-town hash dealer, Viper Higgins. Written by Martin Maloney (Eddie Durkan), Chris Tordoff (Viper) and Mike Cockayne, Hardy Bucks was commissioned by RTE after it won the www.storyland.ie competition. Their 1st series received record viewing figures for a new show on RTE 2 – as a result they were re-commissioned for the Christmas Special. Happy St. Patrick's Day! The composer and lyricist for both of these tunes were (respectively) Rennie Cormack and Al Dubin. Conceived at the Global Irish Economic Forum in 2009 as a way to engage with the Irish diaspora, the Irish government's Certificate of Irish Heritage program opened to applicants this fall. The €40 (€100 framed) certificate is a document that officially recognizes one's Irish heritage, and is aimed at those with Irish ancestry who do not qualify for Irish citizenship. Though initial reports indicated some tourist discounts would be attached, it confers no legal or financial benefits. When details of the certificate first emerged, Irish Independent columnist Martina Devlin scathingly declared it "a demeaning device to hoodwink the descendants of emigrants." Another columnist lampooned the idea with an "Irishness quiz," while polls on other news sites questioning whether it was worthwhile or welcome produced mixed results. In September, the Minister for Foreign Affairs awarded the first Certificate of Irish Heritage posthumously to New York firefighter Joseph Hunter who was killed in the 9/11 attacks. And while application numbers have been low since the worldwide launch, the company contracted to operate the certificate service is planning a major marketing drive in the new year, which will include presenting certificates to select celebrities with Irish ancestry. Cork city councillor Laura McGonigle believes the certificate program is "a great initiative, and creates great value and a bond with our people wherever they live." In fact, she was so inspired by the idea that she has recently proposed the creation of a "Cork passport" as a way to boost local revenue. But if her efforts fail, those proud of their Cork heritage can always get the People's Republic of Cork passport cover.

Toward the Within is the only official live album of the eclectic music group, Dead Can Dance. Recorded in one take in November of 1993, the performance was later released as an album and video. The latter includes short interviews with the heads of the group, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, interspersed with the songs.

Video track list: Opening credits & Rakim Song of the Sibyl, a Gregorian chant and liturgical drama, performed as a duet by Gerrard and Perry. Brendan Perry interview, then I Can See Now and American Dreaming, with vocals by Perry. Perry and Gerrard interview, then Gerrard gives an impressive demonstration of glossolaia, or speaking in tongues, with Cantara, an Arabic word meaning 'bridge'. Then Gerrard switches to regular vocals to do a beautiful version of the Irish ballad, The Wind That Shakes The Barley . I Am Stretched On Your Grave, sung by Perry, is a 17th century Irish poem. Desert Song, an operetta inspired by Moroccan rebels fighting against French colonials. Oman Gloridean Gerrard interview, then the songs Tristan & Sanvean, the latter co-written by Gerrard and composer Andrew Claxton, about Gerrard missing her family in Australia. Perry sings Don't Fade Away as the credits roll The group disbanded in 1998, due to personal conflicts. Gerrard and Perry continued in solo careers and then reunited for a successful world tour in 2005. A new album and world tour are planned for 2012, in the meantime a four song EP, Live Happenings-Part II, is available for free download.

Molly Malone may have been selling more than cockles and mussels out of that wheel barrow. The Guardian reports on a recently rediscovered bawdier version of the song from about 1790. Google Books has a version from 1816 that looks similar (p. 194).
