"Unlike drug narratives, which fixate on withdrawal and destruction, gambling narratives tend to glamorize the upswing—the writer/gambler will always tell you about his biggest score, how quickly he blew the money, and how fast he was back at the tables, but he will rarely tell about the scraped-out bottom. Indeed, the only truthful gambling narratives are told by the family members and friends who witnessed the fallout: the bank account receipts, the early morning arrivals, the hanging stench of re-circulated cigarette smoke. Whereas drug literature comes from those who have bottomed out, there exists no bottom in gambling because every new hand brings fresh hope and possibility. Is it any wonder why most narratives written by gamblers read like boyhood fantasies—every casino a palace, every bellhop a best friend, every dealer an alchemist? Right now, James Jay Lee has hostages at the Discovery Channel buildings in the DC area. the DCist information on the situation. This is a story about him from February 2008. this is his manifesto. This is a link to a local TV news station's live coverage of the situation. Apparently, the daycare was evacuated successfully. (I first heard about it from the twitter feed from ThinkGeek of all places.) Also, MrMoonPie posted about this in MetaTalk; I thank him for the DCist link - I only had the WaPo link.

Songs that clearly and directly address or reference economic hardships and injustice in America, not to mention that do so in a bitter, regretful tone, don't often become enormous hits. Matter of fact, it's such a rare phenomenon that you could count such songs on... um, one finger? Yes, Yip Harburg and Jay Gorney's iconic Brother Can You Spare a Dime is that song. Covered by a surprisingly wide range of singers through the years, the song still resonates. You can hear a partial clip of the Rudy Valee version at a link from this page from the "GCSE page" link. Once again this clip, like most of the YouTube clips linked in the FPP, is comprised of Depression-era images.
