What in the hell is country funk? Here are 33 tracks for reference

Here's a song I didn't know existed until summer 2007, when Lemon Jelly's Fred Deakin released an impeccably curated three-CD mix (full 4 hours on Mixcloud). Halfway through the first disc, the music slipped into an easy, loping groove, sunburned and hungover, and a regretful voice offered Otis Blackwell's lonesome lyric: "You know I can be found/ Sitting home all alone …" [Billy Swan's version of "Don't Be Cruel" is] a beautiful record, though, and utterly different from Elvis's 1956 recording. And it opens a fantastic collection of country funk songs, collected and remastered by Zach Cowie of Light in the Attic Records. More sounds below the break. [more inside]

Is One Of The Names In Rodgers' Envelopes 'Duncan Jenkins'?

Duncan Jenkins, Oldham fan and perspiring football journo, is not real. Slam Dunc overcame his fictional status to get thousands of followers on Twitter and even impact the real world by costing Liverpool FC hundreds of thousands of pounds when the made up journo posted some made up inside information that just happened to be true. Jen Chang, Liverpool's Director of Communications, was not happy and upon finding the real person, a Liverpool fan, behind the account, threatened him with revealing his identity which would lead to the destruction of his parents' business and the smearing of his name by the press. Oh, and a lifetime ban from Anfield, Liverpool's home stadium. [more inside]

A Formal Debate About George W. Bush With Some Unusual Players

On December 4, 2008, at NYC's Symphony Space, NPR's Intelligence Squared program conducted an Oxford-style debate. As their future debate schedules in Australia, England, and America show, the propositions of such debates are routinely phrased strongly to provoke debate, and this was no exception. The motion that was put forward was: "Resolved, that Bush 43 is the worst President of the last 50 years." [mp3, 23 MB, 50 min.] What lifts this above the reams of media and multimedia already spent on this issue is that, moderated by ABC's John Donvan, this premise was debated — under formal debate guidelines — by Jacob Weisberg, Sir Simon Jenkins, Bill Kristol, and ... Karl Rove. [more inside]
