With the recent news that unemployment applications are at their lowest levels since 2008, Congressional Republicans are attempting to curtail unemployment benefits. Democrats want to extend benefits for another year. This has led to an impasse. Still, there are many long term unemployed who will slip into poverty without an extension of these benefits. The uncertainty has left many of these people fearful and angry. Economists are also arguing that the current extensions of unemployment benefits helped prevent the economy from sinking into a depression. Additionally, only 22% of long term unemployed are currently receiving any unemployment benefit.

In fact, it’s so bad George Clooney had to make a PSA about it as if laid off workers were one of his third world causes célèbres. And since his Up in the Air has garnered Oscar buzz we think the jobless are having their day in the sun. But what about the malemployed? The people with crappy jobs only immigrants would do - except now the immigrants are going back home and we have to do them ourselves? The job market is like a Tale of Two Cities – the Wall Street guys and CEOs make billions and the rest of us can’t figure out how we got stuck in these damn cubicles. Our soul-crushingly indistinguishable jobs are the Darwinistic extension of Henry Ford’s assembly line. All to keep labor costs down and drive profits ever higher to satisfy investors and Jim Cramer’s Mad Money crew. And we know why we stay – we need the money and there is nothing else out there.
