You may remember an animated film from the early '90s. Set somewhere in 'Arabia,' a land of bazaars and minarets, the story featured a bored, harem-panted princess, an orphan boy, a treacherous vizier with bird sidekick, a rotund and oblivious sultan, a blue-skinned magic user, et al. But it wasn't Aladdin - and the movie had started production in 1964 ... Animator Richard Williams, who would go on to direct the animation for Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, started The Thief And The Cobbler, his vision of an animation masterpiece. After it was taken over by the bond company for completion and release, it was turned into The Princess And The Cobbler for the international market, and then further changed (with voiceovers to for formerly silent characters) for the American market, into Arabian Knight. But some of the original animation remained, and the film has been partially reconstructed. What you see here is a prime example of what happens to film that is neglected and improperly stored. This is an original reel from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World that is now untouchable. The film has turned acidic, sporting the strongest and most foul vinegar-like odor I have ever smelled. In fact, Robert Harris told me a story of how his contact lenses were singed by the fumes the film produced, causing temporary retinal damage to his eye. Efforts to restore the soundtrack by Ernest Gold have been of interest to The Rosarita Beach Podcast.

In 1992, CBS released a Christmas special directed by Bill Meléndez and produced by Lorne Michaels (a more current link), the cast included John Goodman in the title role, Jonathan Winters, Jan Hooks, Andrea Martin, Brian Doyle-Murray, and a young Elisabeth Moss as Holly. Music by Mark Mothersbaugh. How could this go wrong?

Frosty Returns, in an abbreviated version, but really more than you need to see. Disputably the strangest Christmas special since Fisher crooned Happy Life Day, Frosty Returns is about Frosty’s battle with the evil manufacturer of an aerosol spray that melts snow and ice. The cartoon explores the verge of an environmental apocalypse, and appears to be the first Christmas special that manages to never actually mention Christmas. It’s also notable for its slight problem with continuity, both with the Rankin and Bass version, and with the conceit of the original song (a more current link ), the one requiring Frosty wear a hat. It just aired on CBS last night and 3 million viewers changed the channel or turned off their television.

This piece on comic genius Jonathan Winters makes me sad.
I would have expected that this master improvisor would have come up with a more creative analysis of the current state of entertainment than trotting out the usual suspects of "freak shows" and "political correctness".

BEGIN RANDOM BLATHERING: Then again, the current media environment must be awful, if the Miss America pageant can't seem to get publicity for its Miss America Instant Celebrity Judge Contest. (One caveat: this is NOT the competition where Big Brother's Jamie won Miss Microsoft State -er, I mean Washington State) And how did the premiere of Battlebots slip below my personal radar? And what IS the All-star Newspaper all about? Can I get Dan Gillmor or Aaron Barnhart trading cards now? And why did I need PRNewswire to find out the old rock band Survivor was suing the TV show of the same name? What's going on around here?!?!? END RANDOM BLATHERING
