Foxes jump in a north-easterly direction

Foxes hunt rodents in the snow by listening for their movements and leaping high to pounce on their prey. Interestingly, they hunt most successfully when they jump in a north-easterly direction - 73% of the time. Jumping in the opposite direction has a 60% success rate. Pouncing in other directions was successful only 18% of the time. This was consistent regardless of time of day, season of year and weather conditions. The current theory is that the foxes have a magnetic sense that helps them pinpoint their prey. If you're thinking that this sounds rather bizarre, you're not alone: one of the first people to study the magnetic sense of birds, Roswitha Wiltschko, commented, "This explanation… has plausibility only because there’s hardly any other mechanism that indicates directions.” There's several mechanisms by which creatures can detect magnetic fields. These include small crystals of magnetite which can attract or repel each other indirectly generating a nervous signal, and a molecule called cryptochrome which is found in the retina. This molecule is found in common birds like robins; astonishingly you can disable a robin's magnetic sense by blindfolding it's right eye.

Reuben Reynoso gets paid to jump on mattresses, day after day, mattress after mattress. The McRoskey Mattress Company in San Francisco has been making mattresses — and having people jump on them — for 112 years, since before the 1906 quake.

"It's work," said professional mattress jumper Reuben Reynoso. "It's not for everybody. There is a right way and a wrong way to do it." Reynoso, who jumps on three mattresses a day, does it the right way. He doesn't try for height. He doesn't go "boing" or turn a somersault. His 10 toes are not little piggies going to market. Boston Dynamics is getting close to mastering quadrupedal motion with Big Dog and Cheetah (previously). And are working on bipedal motion with Petman (previously), but how about a robot that is able to leap (up to the top of) tall buildings in a single bound? Sand Flea! IEEE brief on the robot. A rather poor quality video of an earlier prototype of the Sand Flear clearing a 25 foot fence. The purpose of the bot is to provide reconnaissance for the army, and the difference between the earlier build (the "Precision Urban Hopper") and the newer is increased stabilization in air. Boston Dynamics robots not mentioned above the _ahem jump include the all-terrain RHex (YT streaming video), the climber RiSE (YT streaming video), and the adorable Little Dog (YT streaming video).

Might as well jump. JUMP! An interesting article (nicked from linkfilter) about suicide and the Golden Gate Bridge. Only 26 people are known to have survived the 220 ft drop into water 350ft deep. I have been across the bridge once and was "amused" by the fact that there is a free counselling phone as you get halfway across. Reading this article and realising the numbers involved, it suddenly seems less funny... BTW, the jumper (who before he went a second time was one of the 26) protesting the Iraq War was discussed here.
