The Kings Firecrackers performance at a Naval Academy basketball game. When we jumped roped in high school basketball practice I was happy to get through the 60 seconds without falling on my butt. 4th to 8th graders doing this with jump ropes is almost beyond comprehension. 8 minute video - and worth every second of it.

Recently, to celebrate the 3rd year anniversary of the blog, their father asked readers to submit some 'fan art' using past CNLT drawings as inspiration. While some might say it is a concoction, folk etymology suggests the modern usage of crunk originated as a portmanteau of the words "crazy" and "drunk" or having been "cranked up" to a level of excitability at which one becomes "crunk". But I think the kids have it on this one.

Whether you grew up checking out books like Louis the Fish and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie from the library every week, or you just know Steve Horlick's iconic theme song, you're probably familiar with Reading Rainbow, which ends its 26-year run today. Funding has dried up to renew the show's broadcast rights due, in part, to a sea change in the philosophy of teaching reading on television: while Reading Rainbow promoted the idea of reading, some educators today would prefer that programming focus on the mechanics of reading. Others, though, say that the place for such instruction is in the classroom. And although host LeVar Burton left the show in 2007, citing philosophical differences with the program's new owners, Educate, Inc., parent company of Sylvan Learning Centers and Hooked on Phonics, he hints that he's working on adult-targeted webisodes of a similar program. Episodes of Reading Rainbow will still be available for the home and classroom, and there are plans to expand the Young Writers and Illustrators Contest (previously on MetaFilter).

"In the beginning, they asked if I was sure I really wanted to do it," says Laura Dekker, the thirteen year old Dutch girl who wants to become the youngest person to ever sail around the world alone. "They have sailed around the world so they know what could happen and that it's not always fun, but I realize that too. But I really wanted to do it so my parents said, 'Good, we'll help you.'" At just age five, Brooke Breedwell and Asia Mansur were bitter arch-rivals, the top dogs in their age group on the Southern child beauty pageant circuit. The two were even featured in the 1995 documentary Painted Babies [2 3 4 5]. When the two were seventeen, the director of Painted Babies returned to see what kind of women they had become (the resulting documentary is linked under "more inside"). Several days ago, Brooke Breedwell spoke about the impact that beauty pageants had on her life in an interview taped for Good Morning America. Painted Babies At 17 (1 2 3 4 5) examines the divergent paths of these two child beauty queens and former arch-rivals as they grow up into wildly different young women. Brooke's interview with Good Morning America was partially in response to the controversial TLC series Toddlers & Tiaras, which also features child beauty pageant contestants as they prepare and compete for crowns.

Children Full of Life - grade 4 students in Kanazawa, Japan learn deep life lessons from their incredible teacher and from each other. I strongly recommend this as awesome, but one caveat: keep tissues handy. (5 parts, 40 minutes total, English)

Harmonizing Covers

Gymnastics + Parkour = Awesome

Damien Walters combines fantastic gymnastic ability with innovative parkour techniques. His ShowReel 2009 impressed me. He and the Derby City Gym Lads just "messing around" amazed me. But he and his incredibly talented kids horsing around made me a fan and made my day. All videos contain loud-ish music, but some great choices in my opinion. Bonus Video: His ShowReel 2007.

A group of middle-school-aged self-proclaimed nerds from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, who won the New York City FIRST Lego League Robotics Championship with their motorized robot called Thingamajig are embarking on a trip to the Robotics World Festival in Atlanta. After a lack of funds nearly scuttled their journey, they've been bailed out by British vacuum cleaner exec James Dyson, and have been given the kind of sendoff most young nerds can only dream of: an all-school nerd-cheering pep rally.
