Fred Clark posts at a blog called "Slacktivist", so he is often referred to by that name. But this left-wing Christian is far from a slacker. His blog is a powerful voice against the usual conservative Christian presence in America, and the best distillation of his strength is his series of posts analyzing the Left Behind novels of Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. Fred savages these books for their "bad writing and bad theology" but it's not the usual Internet snark; Fred has a larger mission here than just pointing and laughing. He just finished dissecting book two, Tribulation Force, so it's a great time to jump on if you already haven't. (He has promised that after a holiday break, he's going to do the Tribulation Force movie, and then on to book three.) This index will help you out, though it's currently incomplete. Left Behind begins at part 1 and goes through part 196. Left Behind: The Movie goes from part 197 to part 208. Part 209 is an aside on another bit of rapture literature. Tribulation Force begins at part 210 and just wrapped up yesterday. It seems like a lot, but it's not only insightful, funny, educational, and enlightening, it's essential reading for getting into the minds of many conservative evangelical Christians.

Not your average family movie

Before the Left Behind series, there was A Thief In The Night, a 70's B-Movie that scared countless young church-goers witless. The acting is described as "wooden" and the production quality was poor, but the film is remembered by many chidren of the 70's and 80's as "that movie from church that scared me to death." The film opens with a young woman waking up to find that people all over the world have suddenly disappeared, and she soon learns that she was left behind after the Rapture. It follows her through the resulting End of Times, including the introduction of the mark of the beast as a replacement for currency, and the world coming under the power of the Antichrist and his U.N.I.T.E. (United Nations Imperium for Total Emergency) organisation. The film had three sequels which extended into the 1980's, all released by Mark IV Pictures, now Russ Doughton, who also sell a Prophecy Survival Guide. The film is available in its entirety on YouTube, in seven parts.

Slacktivist Wraps Up Left Behind

Slacktivist has been discussed on the blue before. His epic deconstruction, interpretation, and at times even translation of the Left Behind book series started in October of 2003. Today, it has come to an end. In between, Slacktivist has explored the impact of the Left Behind series and the fundamentalist worldview on religion and the media, and even gone on to inspire Left Behind fanfic. Fred Clark, the Slacktivist himself, intends to continue his five year project with the Left Behind movie, followed by the second book, Tribulation Force.

The Antichrist Checklist : The most recent entry in Slacktivist's extremely insightful and entertaining series on mocking and deconstructing the Left Behind books. Being written from the perspective of a non-fundie Christian just makes it even more powerful. Slacky reveals how manufactured the cooked-up, hacked-together "prophecy," that fuels the series is. If you believe all that nonsense, and can make it through this series with your wacky premillennial dispensationalist beliefs intact, then I'm sorry but there is no hope for you.

Highlights of this week's installment, the best I've seen in a while: the antichrist, the paucity of the biblical evidence for him/it, and this sentence: "The composite sketch derived from all these descriptions yields a portrait that looks a little like Nebuchadnezzar, a little like Antiochus Epiphanes, a little like Nero or Diocletian, and a little like Victor von Doom."

I shared life's Growing Pains with him, and even winced through a video taped copy of Left Behind after finding the books interesting enough, but even my Christian friends think that this is just plain over the top. Ah, the born-again B-list celebrity.

Softsoaping Armageddon

"Armageddon" is not a global conflagration gone totally out of control. It is, instead, the gathering of the armies of Satan in a place called Armageddon at the north end of Israel. Huh? Anyway, it's not like these guys are influencing American foreign policy. Heads up for April 8 when Tim La Haye, co-founder of the ultraconservative Council for National Policy, will release Armageddon, the latest installment in the Left Behind series of millennialist apocalyptic thrillers.
