Today, at noon (central daylight time) the Minnesota Senate will begin debate on a bill to legalize same sex marriages. The bill already passed the Minnesota House. As Reuters reports, the Senate will likely pass the bill, and Governor Mark Dayton has promised to sign it into law. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that gay marriage has made a dramatic turn in Minnesota in just two years. As Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Scheck notes, just two years ago a Republican controlled state legislature thought it would benefit them to place a constitutional ban on gay marriage on the ballot. MinnPost suggests the Suburbs' Love is the Law (YouTube link) may become the unofficial celebratory anthem for the legalization of gay marriage in Minnesota. Chan Poling from the Suburbs discussed his support for gay marriage with the Current and revealed that the song may be performed at the big celebration on Tuesday after the governor signs the bill.

'Church,
I got to go to the Macklemore concert on Friday night. If you want to hear about how that went, ask me, seriously, I want to talk about it until I die. The whole thing was great; but the best part was when Macklemore sang “Same Love.” Augustana’s gym was filled to the ceiling with 5,000 people, mostly aged 18-25, and decked out in thrift store gear (American flag bro-tanks, neon Nikes, MC Hammer pants. My Cowboy boyfriend wore Cowboy boots…not ironically….). The arena was brimming with excitement and adrenaline during every song, but when he started to play “Same Love,” the place about collapsed. Why? While the song is popular everywhere, no one, maybe not even Macklemore, feels its true tension like we do in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. If you’re not familiar, here’s the song.'

'Before the song, Macklemore spoke really simple words along the lines of: “Hey, you can all have your own opinions on how we treat gay people in this country, but this is mine.” And I held my breath in anticipation of some kind of uproar or walk-out…but the crowd cheered louder than they had yet. In our red state, in our conservative little city, the 5,000 young people in that arena wanted to hear about marriage equality."

Conservative Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) came out in favor of marriage equality today, in an interview on CNN and an Op-Ed in the Columbus Dispatch. This reversal comes via Portman's son, who came out as a gay man to his parents two years ago. Reaction has been mixed.

The Campaign For Southern Equality announces Game On! [2m28s] in its latest push to make marriage equality an issue across the South, beginning January 2nd. Campaign For Southern Equality's WE DO campaign is entering its fourth stage:

Between January 2nd and 14th, LGBT couples will request and be denied marriage licenses in their hometowns across the South. On January 17, the final day of Stage 4, couples will be denied licenses in Arlington and we will begin a 4.5 mile march into Washington, DC. We will end at the Jefferson Memorial in an action that includes a blessing honoring the legal marriage under D.C. law of one couple from North Carolina, Mark and Tim. The final day of action is an expression of resistance to current laws and celebration of our community. The actions on January 17 are intended to highlight the lives and stories of LGBT people from across the South; the powerful reality that in our nation’s capital LGBT people have the right to marry; and the injustice that legal marriages between same-sex couples are not recognized in the South.

In an interview published yesterday, Dan Cathy, president of Chick-Fil-A, tells the Baptist Press that Chick-Fil-A is "very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit." Also this week, Cathy told radio host Ken Coleman "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say 'we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage." This is a change in Chick-Fil-A's corporate position; in 2011, responding to criticism that the company and its charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation, support organizations that work against LGBT rights and marriage equality, Cathy stated that the company "will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family." Chick-Fil-A is a fast food chain of franchises that operates in 39 US states; in 2011, annual sales exceeded $4 billion USD. The company is privately held.

NOM Strategy Documents Publicly Released

Docket Item 132-2 a.k.a NOM Desposition Exhibit 12 a.k.a "National Strategy for Winning the Marriage Battle" was unsealed yesterday along with many others and the Human Rights Campaign have been busy scouring the documents. The documents were taken as part of a deposition in NOM's ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit against the constitutionality of Maine's campaign financing disclosure laws which itself was launched as a pre-emptive strike against an investigation by the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices. Now that the Supreme court has rejected their appeal the documents from the trial have been unsealed. NOM's infamous and numerous attempts to hide its actions and backers in secrecy seems to have backfired this time. As a result it has allowed pro-equality groups an unprecedented look at the tactics used by the conservative "marriage protection" group.

Although same-sex couples are granted full equality under the law, they are legally prohibited from marrying or entering into a civil partnership, making such recognition and equality difficult to enter into practice. "This is it." This week, the final push is on for marriage equality in New York and it looks like the state is closer than ever. The NY State Senate voted against a marriage equality bill in 2009 despite Sen. Diane Savino's awesome floor speech, but the political landscape has changed. There are more Democrats in the Senate, public support for marriage equality is at an all--time high, and Governor Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg have thrown their considerable political weight behind a bill. Until today, supporters of the bill needed to find six additional yes votes for passage. But morning brought a report that seven Republican senators have indicated they could support the bill. This afternoon, three Democrats who opposed the 2009 bill announced that they are switching their vote. (The lone remaining Democrat who will vote no is Ruben Diaz, whose openly gay granddaughter recently described her feelings about his stance.) If a bill is passed New York will be, by a wide margin, the largest state with legal same-sex marriage. [previously]

In what appears to be the first such action of its type, an Immigration Judge in Manhattan has adjourned deportation proceedings for the Argentine lesbian spouse of an American citizen to allow the couple to proceed with their application to have their marriage recognized for purposes of federal immigration law. The DoJ's announcement that they will no longer defend DOMA in court has given bi-national same-sex couples new hope that they can fight deportation of non-citizen spouses.
