McDonald's has a new website
dedicated to showing employees how to properly budget their paychecks. Death and Taxes takes a look
and concludes: "McDonalds' suggested budget for employees shows just how impossible it is to get by on minimum wage." It also notably excludes heat, food and gas.

In 1985, McDonalds sued left-wing activists in the UK for libel over a pamphlet accusing the multinational food giant of environmental destruction, abuses of workers' rights and selling junk food. The ensuing trial became the longest-running civil trial in English history, ending in 1997 in a Pyrrhic victory for McDonalds, who had lost millions of pounds in pursuing the case, and won £40,000 for their trouble. (The judgment was later overturned in the European Court of Human Rights.) Now, it has been revealed that the leaflet in question had been co-written by an undercover police officer assigned to infiltrate Greenpeace
. The officer in question, Bob Lambert, had previously spent years infiltrating environmental groups, even fathering children with activists
before disappearing. [more inside]

McDonald's, a sponsor
of the Olympics since 1968, will open a two-story cathedral-like restaurant
that seats 1,500 customers, at London's Olympic Park. A group of British doctors say that the mega-McDonald’s sends the wrong message about obesity.

What makes the McRib different from this everyday horror is that a) McDonald’s is huge to the point that it’s more useful to think of it as a company trading in commodities than it is to think of it as a chain of restaurants b) it is made of pork, which makes it a unique product in the QSR world and c) it is only available sometimes, but refuses to go away entirely.

The two year long saga of how
McDonalds engineered the perfect cottage cheese filet for the McSpicy Paneer burger. McD has a turbulent
history in India where its processes, practices and products, successfully developed over decades, have been turned upside down and redesigned

McDonalds may have the worst burgers
, but they have (visual) durability on their side
, remaining consistent in appearance over 180 days on a shelf. McDonalds doesn't trust the images, according to a comment sent to The Upshot
, though review by Salon finds that preservatives may not be necessary
. With all this, the 180 day old Happy Meal has nothing on the hamburger from 1996
, which remained unfrozen yet mold-free through 2008
, or the 30 year old Twinkie
that survived, unwrapped, on a shelf in Roger Bennatti's high school science class

"It's true that McD's hiring process and training is essentially getting you to breathe on a mirror, and, if it fogs up, you're in... but that doesn't mean we're all bad. Just that we're a mixed bag. A lot of the time, McDonalds is the only place that will hire teenagers or immigrants, regardless of their skills, especially in todays climate." McDonald's Talk [more inside]

Be a hero on your own time (VIDEO)
When McDonald's employee Nigel Haskett interceded to stop a man who was beating a woman in the restaurant
, the assailant went outside, retrieved a gun from his car and shot Haskett – “multiple times,” as the employee stood at the door to keep the assailant from re-entering the restaurant. $300,000 in medical bills later, McDonald's insurance says no dice: "we have denied this claim in its entirety as it is our opinion that Mr. Haskett's injuries did not arise out of or within the course and scope of his employment."

Fast Food Apartheid:
The Los Angeles City Council has placed a one-year moratorium on the opening of fast-food restaurants in sections of the city with low-income residents. The council says it's meant to encourage healthy fare in locations that lack ready access to supermarkets and healthy restaurant. This columnist calls it "fast food apartheid." We're not talking anymore about preaching diet and exercise, disclosing calorie counts, or restricting sodas in schools. We're talking about banning the sale of food to adults. Treating French fries like cigarettes or liquor.

Think those salads at McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, and Taco Bell are a good idea if you want something lighter? Turns out you're actually better off
getting a double cheeseburger instead. For more info on nutritional facts about fast food, CalorieKing
has a good database.

. "This month McDonald's is giving away toy Hummers — 42 million of them, in eight models and colors — with every Happy Meal or Mighty Kids Meal. That's right: The fast-food chain that helped make our kids the fattest on Earth is now selling future car buyers on the fun of driving a supersized, smog-spewing, gas-guzzling SUV.."
