A lot of the time, McDonalds is the only place that will hire teenagers or immigrants, regardless of their skills, especially in todays climate." McDonald's Talk "How the heck do you tell customers you can't take their trash through the window? I tried the health violation thing, but they don't seem to care. I usually say, we're not supposed to, and there's a trashcan around the corner (hard to see if you're in the drive-thru). I've recently added on why we can't (health vio), as I just found out. Some chick got really uppity with me over it last week because I wouldn't throw her Hardee's crap out. Um, hello, honey, do I look like a trashcan (or a bank, for that matter)? I have problems with the cops who come through too (quote, "Yeah, what am I gonna put in it?"), who think they're damned special. Still, rules apply to them too. Anyway, ranting aside, original question, what's a good way to turn these folks down? I hardly seem rude when I tell them but they just don't get it, I guess. :/"

Fast Food Apartheid: The Los Angeles City Council has placed a one-year moratorium on the opening of fast-food restaurants in sections of the city with low-income residents. The council says it's meant to encourage healthy fare in locations that lack ready access to supermarkets and healthy restaurant. This columnist calls it "fast food apartheid." We're not talking anymore about preaching diet and exercise, disclosing calorie counts, or restricting sodas in schools. We're talking about banning the sale of food to adults. The International Networks Archive is an effort by a group of sociologists to understand 2,000 years of globalization through mapping the network of transactions that link the world, rather than geography. The project is still ongoing, but you can see some of the results: an interactive map that uses travel time to visualize the world; a graphic of the growth of Starbucks and McDonalds; the distribution of government jobs (apparently the 3,412 postal inspectors can carry firearms); the cashflows of movies and tobacco; and, of course, the world at night.
