You wouldn't think so from its trendy shops and restaurants today, but Seven Dials was once one of the worst slums in London. Intended as a smart residential area when its construction was completed in 1710, this cartwheel of streets between Charing Cross Road and Covent Garden quickly declined to become an over-crowded refuge for the city's thieves. It was here that London's thriving trade in gallows ballads made its home.
A collaboration across more than 100 years, from the jobbing hacks writing ballads and selling them at the foot of the gallows to
the historical investigation of the British Library's broadsheet collection by MeFi's own
Paul Slade, to modern rock, folk, and blues musicians, and then to your ears.

A Month In Music -
"There are 10,513 MP3s on my hard disk. According to iTunes, that’s nearly 30 days worth of music. It has taken half my life – 15 years – to build this collection but I decided to listen to them all in one go. One continuous concert, playing songs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I wanted to revist all the songs I'd once loved, and the memories and places they called up. The only choice I made was the first track. After that, the computer randomly decided what was going to play. No stopping. No skipping. No changing the volume. Music, all the time, for a whole month. The Month In Music blog charts the progress of the playback project, updated once a day with original writing and photography."

The 23rd Century is a sweet band that just released their new CD, "Take A Trip Though Time With...The 23rd Century",
for free online in mp3 format. The album was created by metafilter user
tcobretti and his cousin. You can purchase the album
here to support them, or you can buy their tshirt, obviously inspired/ripped off from the
John Titor insignia. There is also a cool schematic-based navigation to the site, presumably from the same great mind who brought us
runoffgroove.com. [via
