BONUS: Forum user Glass Knuckle's epic-length thread A Critical Look At Mega Man Stages (warning: will take days to get through, because he means ALL Mega Man stages, through the sequels)

Interesting facts gleaned from the series:
- In the first quest, all of Zelda's overworld secret passages are optional except those which lead to dungeons (which have clues).
- In Castlevania, every platform that looks like it's floating in the air is actually supported by background scenery. This continues (to a lesser extent) in Castlevania III.
- In Castlevania, great care was taken so that the castle is a consistent place. Pillars that extend between two screens match up between them.
- In areas with flowing water in Castlevania III, if you happen to have Sypha with you with the Ice magic, you can freeze it, a cool effect that makes these sections much easier.
- The most powerful weapon in Castlevania III is Sypha's "weakest" subweapon, the Fire magic, which does twice the damage of the maxxed-out whip.
- There is a stage in Castlevania III, the Skeleton Dragon King, where the boss is fought halfway through, but escapes with four health left, which you have to knock off of him at the end of the level (while the water level rises beneath you).

Castlevania III was changed in non-trivial ways between the Japanese and American releases. The music is different; although the tunes are generally the same in structue, the Japanese release (which unlike the first two games wasn't originally a Disk System game) includes extra sound hardware in the cartridge that provides extra instruments. Also, Grant's abilities were changed: in Japan, Grant can always throw Daggers. In the US, they gave him the ability to use the Dagger Subweapon, in addition to the Axe. And enemies do damage by creature type in the Japanese version, while in the US version they do damage depending on where in the game you encounter them (like the original game). Because of this, the Japanese version is a little easier than the American version.

Street Fighter x Mega Man

Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of the original Mega Man, a series-spawning platformer-shooter starring a blue robot with a gun for a hand who traverses dangerous levels and defeats robot bosses, gaining a new weapon with each boss he defeats. In celebration, Capcom has officially released a fan game, Street Fighter x Mega Man, with the Street Fighter cast (who made their own debut twenty five years ago in August) taking the role of the bosses. Watch the trailer or download it from Capcom's website!

Old Spice Red

Dikembe Mutombo's 4 1/2 Weeks to Save the World is the tale of the struggle of Dikembe Mutombo to prevent the end of the world due to the Mayan calendar running out of time. You have to stop people from dancing Gangnam style and persuade Ohio to vote; you have to destroy cheap Black Friday toys; you have to destroy the Powerball winning numbers to prevent a literal Hollywood fatcat from producing another Vampire romance. And the game is an ad for a product that appears once in the loading screen. Advertising firm Wieden+Kennedy comes up with the concepts for each weekly installment and Canabalt creator Adam Saltsman implements them. Expect two more episodes before the end of the world. More info.

The concept of a basketball player as a gaming hero has precedent in indie darling Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden and older games such as Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City and Shaq Fu.

"Rubik's hot dog not hot either."

The mid 1980's marked the zenith of popularity for Erno Rubik's amazing cube (previously on the blue). But how magic was it? To find out, Ruby-Spears Productions gave the toy a face, legs and some clever, albeit grammatically incorrect dialogue, and in 1983 Rubik the Amazing Cube was born! The theme song, as performed by Menudo:
♫On a mysterious night, when the cube appeared...[unintelligible]
Then the cube had changed everything in our lives
He's colorful, magical, loooovable!
Rubik, he's our friend. Rubik, the amazing cube!♫

After the poorly-reinforced treasure chest holding Rubik captive fell from the angry man's stagecoach, Rubik was adopted by a well-to-do family who just so happened to need some crime-fighting help and light amusement. Behold Rubik's magical powers!

-He proffers upon Lisa the power of flight in "Super Power Lisa" (Part 1, 2, 3)!
-One of his cubic pieces can serve as a bugging microphone to help kids find a coffin!
-Need I point out he's an excellent dancer!

Vs. Airman

Vs. Airman is kind of mind-blowing the first time you see it. It is not a PC or flash game, but a romhack that can run on a real NES. But which game is it a hack of? My own guess: the distinctive physics of Super Mario Bros. would be harder to recreate than the graphics effects and enemies of Air Man's level of Mega Man II, and I notice they changed the music, which could be because SMB's engine couldn't handle the advanced chiptune music techniques Mega Man tend to feature.

There are other versions of the hack out there it seems. Here's one a bit closer to Super Mario Bros. in level design. Auntie Pixelante hosts a copy of the original patch.

Game-Inspired Music

Anyone who grew up playing video games understands the impact of the music. But the internet has allowed all sorts of people to express their love in many different ways. There's World of Warcraft-themed music based on existing songs like Ninja Raiders (Beyonce's Single Ladies) and Worgen of Stormwind (Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London), and some of the WoW developers themselves write original heavy metal tunes as the Level 80 Tauren Chieftains.

Older games, particularly from the older Nintendo systems, inspire reworked tunes, original tunes, and original web-based video series with musical episodes (NSFW warning!) There's also the now 2-volume Mega Man Rock Opera (previously). Brand-new games are also sources of inspiration.

There are also a whole collection of songs by major artists recorded in Simlish, which is pretty trippy. And in a fit of recursion, a song written for a game was made available in another game, which was then performed live by the creator. (Previously 1,2.)

It's not Friday and it's not Flash. Eric David Ruth makes downloadable PC games which generally ape the style of old-school console games. He's got quite a bit of attention recently for Pixel Force Left 4 Dead, which attempts to recreate Left 4 Dead as it would have been on the NES.

The Protomen [previously] in 2005 released the most geektastic dystopian nightmare of a MegaMan based rock opera anyone could have possibly conceived. After four years, they have finally released a followup album: Act II: The Father Of Death Obsessive fans have been clamoring over the details of the story, which serves as a prequel to the events of the debut album.

Without revealing too many details, it details the working relationship between Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily as it deteriorates, as Wily goes mad and takes the life of the only woman Dr. Light ever loved, frames Dr. Light for the crime and forces him into exile and his eventual return to the city and attempt to save it, setting the stage for the story of the first album.

Musically, the band has changed from electronic/indie mashup sounds of their first album to a first rate Wagnerian Rock band that Jim Steinman would be proud of. As evidenced by tracks like "Light Up The Night", the band has adopted a distinctly epic 80's soundtrack style which fits their theatrical music perfectly.

Other album tracks (though it is a disservice not to listen to the album as a whole):

"The Good Doctor"
"The Hounds"

Because sometimes playing only two Mega Man games simultaneously with the same input just doesn't satisfy. Presenting Mega Man 3, 4, 5, and 6 - at the same ding-donged time. The music alone will drive you insane.
