Hygienic and Scientific Cooking

"....many a tragic episode in family life is superinduced by the baleful influence of a tortured stomach. Mighty is the hand that holds the ballot-box, but mightier is the hand that wields to advantage the pepper-box, the salt-spoon, and the sugar-shaker." read the entirely of Maud C. Cooke's, Breakfast, Dinner and Supper; or, What To Eat and How To Prepare It (1897) online and enter a world of home remedies, large scale recipes, sound advice, leftover wizardry, squirrel stews, scientific digestion, and horrible things done to vegetables.

Menus as art

A digitized collection of 9000+ menus from the Dijon library, dating back to the 1800s. (Linked material is in French, but fairly easy to navigate). Menus scanned include weddings, baptisms, and wedding anniversaries among other events. Found via Chocolate and Zucchini.

"Honky-Tonky Double Barrel Meat Loaded Blast"

Guy Fieri's American Kitchen (maybe not Metafilter's own, but definitely Metatalk's favorite) has a new menu. It is only marginally more ridiculous than the old one.

MenuVista

MenuVista (Quicktime req), the thesis project of ITP (NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program) student Chia-wei Chang, gives restaurant customers a preview of their orders by projecting photos of the meal on their empty plates. The system also allows them to modify their orders by using a projected menu with a touch sensor interface which includes menu text and food images. More ITP thesis presentations from last week »

I'm adding new functionality to MetaFilter. I'm testing out a floating, draggable menu for links. The links are static for now, but will be customizable by users. It should work in IE4+ and NS4+, post a comment with your OS/browser if you find any problems. I'm also playing with the stylesheet for this page, since I just noticed the spacing between posts looks awful in IE4.5 on the Mac.
