Norwegian skydiver nearly struck by meteorite.
Although Helstrup is still not completely convinced that it was indeed a meteorite that flew past him, the experts are in no doubt. “It can’t be anything else. The shape is typical of meteorites – a fresh fracture surface on one side, while the other side is rounded,” said geologist Hans Amundsen, “It has never happened before that a meteorite has been filmed during dark flight; this is the first time in world history.” [more inside]

Lakota Winter Counts.
Lakota and other plains tribes counted time by winters. An appointed recorder would choose one major event to mark the year, depicting that event by name and symbol
. Early records dating back to the 10th century were often painted on buffalo skins
; more recent winter counts were recorded as text journals
. These fascinating records offer insight into natural and historic events for our land that precede accounts of European settlers. - more -

An asteroid large enough to wipe out a country that was discovered a month ago will pass less than twice the Moon's distance from the earth. Meanwhile the British have selected a site for their near Earth object information centre
. Hopefully they will have a direct line to Bruce Willis, just in case.

A recent discovery of a meteor impact crater in the middle-east, dating around 2300BC, is shedding new light on the decline of many cultures and the rise of many legends.

'Pope hit by meteor' sculpture
sets a contemporary art record at Christie's and sells for $886,000

Let us prepare for impact.
A group of scientists is working on a standardized protocol for dealing with the possibility of a comet or massive asteroid striking the Earth, saying humans can do more than the dinosaurs ever could before a colossal impact precipitated their extinction 65 millions years ago.
"We have now overcome the giggle factor."
I don't know if we have........
