For the last two years Scott Toepfer have been taking still photographs for a personal project entitled ‘It’s Better In The Wind,’ all the while collecting video footage from each ride as friends traveled around the Western United States together. Toepfer has been slowly editing the footage into a visual scrapbook of sorts for those who partook, and those who followed them via the web. No preaching the triumphs and failures of the motorcycle industry, no divisive commentary between manufacturers and styles…just a collection of imagery that will hopefully inspire more people to take to the road and discover what there is outside of our respective communities. Deaths in MotoGP

There hasn't been a death in the premiere class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing since 2003. Recently, there were 2 deaths in 8 days. While not strictly a MotoGP event, Peter Lenz was killed in a USGPRU race during the MotoGP weekend at Indianapolis. He was 13 years old. Accusations of poor parenting have been leveled. Others disagree. Then, in Italy, a promising 19 year old racer from Japan, Shoya Tomizawa was killed in a similar accident. Questions have been raised about the performance of the safety officials and decisions made. A BBC overview of the situation. A video of the Tomizawa crash. It may be unpleasant footage for some to watch.

Trials riding is a sport where someone takes a specialized motorcycle and make it do things that shouldn't be possible. Stuff like precision balancing on a beam, climbing vertical walls, and jumping gaps from a stop. And they do all this without ever putting their feet down.

His blog entry has a map of the route and then-and-now photos. This week Slate's doing the same thing, except in a PT Cruiser (and flying over part of the route).

On July 4, 1916, Gussie and Addie Van Buren set out from New York on two Indian Model F motorcycles. Though it was well before the creation of an interstate highway system, they reached San Francisco on September 2 and Southern California on September 8. Their goal was to prove that women could serve in the impending World War as motorcycle dispatch drivers [pdf]. (And once women served in war, it would be harder to deny them the right to vote.) They're now enshrined in both the Sturgis Hall of Fame and the American Motorcyclist Hall of Fame.

Evel is gone from the world Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. (October 17, 1938 - November 30, 2007) was a motorcycle daredevil who has been a household name since the late 1960s, and arguably the most iconic motorbike stuntman of all time. Evel Knievel's highly publicized motorcycle jumps, including his attempt to jump over the Snake River Canyon, claim four of the top 20 most-watched Wide World of Sports events of all time. He enjoyed a lengthy career in this extreme sport despite suffering a series of major injuries during stunts.

Online since May, the last few weeks alone have featured vintage monster model kits, Nazi sex paperback covers, lots of crazy comics (including King Kong) and bizarre action magazines, Hammer vampire posters, old motorbike helmets, Japanese plastic toys, UFO zines from the 1950s and 60s, French art from 1910 depicting the year 2000, as well as some pictures of famed Mexican masked wrestler Santo I'd never seen before. 40 years ago, the Vicious Cycles motorcycle club assaulted a construction worker before taking to the road. Fortunately, filmmakers Chuck Menville (father of voice artist Scott Menville) and Len Janson were on hand to film the gang's misdeeds. Menville and Janson's picture would ultimately become part of a trilogy, with Blaze Glory and Sargent Swell of the Mounties produced wit similar eye-catching style. Decades later, the filmmakers' work would be echoed in another tale of conflict, in addition to a product-themed homage to more recent hipster subculture.
