The occasion was celebrated by the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/7765897.stm">official opening of an 5.8 mile M6 extension</a>, closing the "Cumberland Gap", allowing commuters to make the entire 400 mile journey between Glasgow and London by motorway.
