Popular musicians somewhat embarassing pre-fame Heavy Metal bands.

Before there was Weezer, there was Zoom (nee-Avant Garde), Rivers Cuomo's poodle haired progressive metal band.

Before there was Mr. Bungle performing at the 1986 Eureka High School Talent Show [previously], there was Mike Patton and Trevor Dunn in the glammy Gemini performing at the 1984 Eureka High School Talent Night.

And perhaps most legendarily, before there was Pantera. There was Pantera.

Ghosts On The Record

It used to be that a CD or good old fashioned 12" vinyl would simply play, and your only indication of when it was about to end would be the album tracklisting printed on the sleeve. Hearing another song start up just as you thought the album was finished and got up to change the record was always an unexpected thrill - a surprise encore in your bedroom, a sort of reward for listening right through to the end. Yes, the iPod and its many variants have transformed the way people listen to music, but as someone who grew up waiting excitedly when an album finished to see if there was an extra hidden treat at the end of an album, I'll always see the death of the secret song as the sad flipside of its success. Skyscrapers & Submarines

Mr. Bungle Monday!!! In their 15-year career, the band only made one music video and it was banned by MTV for being ... well, generally deranged. Quote Unquote was originally called Travolta but Warner Bros. pressured them into changing the title. Luckily, their 3rd and final album left enough of a lasting impression to warrant fanmade videos. Thus, we now have: a)YT user tkan's Chris Cunningham-inspired Retrovertigo & the Hitchcock-esque Pink Cigarette clips; b)YT user Illusionoel's Goodbye Sober Day, which reworks footage from Baraka; and c)Vertigo, a beautiful medley of the album itself, California, performed by a highschool drumline [more inside]

Mondo Cane

"If you like orchestral music and have a heart in your fucking chest, you will like this record." Mike Patton, former front man of Faith No More, frequent John Zorn collaborator, founding member of Mr. Bungle, is releasing an album covering old Italian pop songs in May, called Mondo Cane. A live performance can be streamed from Youtube. [more inside]

Winky-Dink and You

Winky-Dink and You is considered to be the world's first interactive television show. Originally broadcast from 1953 to 1957, show watchers drew items directly on the TV screen to help Winky-Dink out of jams. The show also introduced us to Mr. Bungle (but not this Mr. Bungle, who gave us this Mr. Bungle).

Warner Music buys Rykodisc

Warner Music set to buy Rykodisc. Although Rykodisc has already lost its independence, its apparent corporate resting place is bad news to fans of Ryko's many remarkable but commercially underperforming artists, and particularly to the legion and devoted fans of Frank Zappa [flash, audio], whose conflicts with and hatred for WB are well documented. Prove me wrong, Warner Bros. For the love of that which is best (music), prove me wrong.

CAVEAT It would be dishonest of me to post at WB's expense without publicly giving them credit for letting Mr Bungle do whatever they wanted.
