A quiet revolution is taking place in the multiple sclerosis community. Long thought of as purely an autoimmune disease, possibly secondary to Epstein-Barr virus infection or even an STI, MS has never been pinned down to a single cause. Now things are changing, in a big and bloody way: MS appears to be related to abnormalities in veins. In December 2008, Italian researchers reported that the vast majority of 65 MS patients studied, and none of the 235 controls, had significant abnormalities in the veins draining the brain. While it's too early to conclusively identify this as the cause, rather than an effect, of MS, patient forums have been abuzz with talk of this discovery and the ensuing positive experiences of MS patients who have had stents placed to alleviate venous stenoses. Of course, no new discovery would be complete without word from the non-conventional medical community. The proponents of Inclined Bed Therapy -- raise the head of your bed by six inches, cure all ills! -- are already using this news as justification for their claims.

In celebration of my antipodean homesickness I've spent the morning catching up with some great Australian and New Zealand musical comedy acts I've been to. You've already met Flight of the Conchords previously on mefi. Now come and meet some... Flight of the conchords have appeared previously on mefi (as well they should) but you might be excited to know they aren't the only antipodean musical comedy act! Come and meet some of the others. We'll start with the original bad boys of musical comedy: the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS); as likely to leap into the crowd to pash someone as spit on them, DAAS live shows were an anarchic mix of foul songs(NSFW), spoken word, actual great singing and, if you were lucky enough to catch one of their later gigs, this song. More recently we have Tripod who continue the three piece theme but are a bit more user friendly and who are gonna make you happy. Women represent in the form of the Kranzky sisters who...well, defy description really. Across the water we also get the foul mouthed Ms Peacock They're not exactly musical, but unusual sound does play a big part with The Umbilical Brothers

While MS-bashing is often too easy, this statement about recent security holes seemed especially astounding: "Outlook Express ships with every Windows system, or rather as part of IE, so it's on every system. But unless it is configured to receive mail, you are not at risk," said Scott Culp, manager for Microsoft security response. Interesting. Unless it is configured to receive mail, like, you know, an email program.

Oh. My. God. Microsoft continues to amaze me and all its users with increasingly alarming security vulnerabilities. The Office 2000 Clipart Gallery (clipart for chrissakes!!!) can compromise any Win95/98/NT/2000 machine with something as simple as an email message read in Outlook. Here's Microsoft's take on it, and their patch.
