STEVIE WASHINGTON- THE ANGRY YOUTH! If you watched MTV in the late 1980s, chances are during a commercial break you'd catch an episode of Stevie and Zoya (A.K.A. Stevie Washington- The Angry Youth). The series was created by Joe Horne, who later produced the similar series The Specialists (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)for MTV's Liquid Television . Narration was provided by Russell Johnson probably best known as The Professor on Gilligan's Island. There's also a couple of recent flash animations for Stevie Washington, which may or may not be by Joe Horne. (I'm thinking not.)

Central Massachusetts, sometime in early 1985. You were cranking your way through the UHF dial when you caught a glimpse of Rock and Roll. It was V66, and you were hooked. On February 12, 1985, WVJV-TV - V66 - was born in Natick, Massachusetts. A local, over-the-air competitor to MTV, V66 was a dream come true for the cable-less masses. V66 was fairly chaotic - playing local artists (The Fools, Lizzie Bordon and the Axes, and Extreme), next to more alternative bands (the Cure, the Smiths, the Cult, and Kate Bush (interesting prehistoric ARPA post of some sort from a grateful fan in 1986!)), while also producing local versions of national songs (like a debasement of the worst song ever recorded, We Built this City, with Boston replacing SF, and an edited Money For Nothing with the V66 logo replacing MTV), as well as videos of local interest (This excrutiating alternative to the Superbowl Shuffle. Clearly the v66 candle burned twice as bright because by late 1986 it was all over - replaced by Home Shopping. So, until the documentary is finished, all we can do is watch these station ID outtakes starring Aerosmith, Cheech and Chong, and AC/DC (warning - dumbasses))

Sam Kieth is an interesting guy, coming from an artistic family (including a cousin who created the animated series Cow and Chicken). His professional work has mostly been in the world of comics, though he did direct a movie for Roger Corman, entitled "Take it to the Limit" (2000), as a way "to recharge [his] batteries after the Maxx." The Maxx was a 35 issue comic (plus a few bonuses), and later animated and aired on Mtv's Oddities in the mid 1990s. (More videos inside) Only officially released in part on VHS, and now slowly re-appearing as fragments of the original episodes on MTV2 Legit, most of the 13 episodes can be found on YouTube. It's finally happened: After a decade of struggle with MTV over royalty fees and the belief that there would be no market for it, The State is finally being released on DVD on July 19th, 2009. Until then, you can watch streaming video (albeit chopped up in an irritating way) of the episodes from MTV's site, via Hulu, and compare differences such as the soundalike placed in for The Breeders' "Cannonball" in this famous sketch.

When Ms. Schneider posted a photo of a “College Humor Show” poster at MTV’s studios in Times Square on her Tumblr blog this week, she captioned it, “By far the most exciting thing to ever happen to me.” “TV is more exclusive,” she said in an interview. “People have a different relationship with TV” than with online video, she said. Hey, what ever happened to Julie Brown? ( not that one) She was a hit in Earth Girls Are Easy with her number, Cause I'm a Blonde. She had another hit with the Dr. Demento staple The Homecoming Queens' Got a Gun! Then she faded into the cultural-artifact twilight ... She kept up the songs, expressing her taste in men, fighting women, and wondering if she'll make it through the decade. Julie appeared in a few good TV shows and some bad movies. (She was even on Werid Al!) MTV gave her an odd, short-lived show, Just Say Julie! She continued music parodies with Medusa: Dare To Truth, a giddy parody of Madonna's documentary. Nowadays, she's mostly at home, working on a web-based comeback. She even has a blog.

In 1999, MTV aired 25 Lame, a show where retired 25 of their worst and most overplayed videos. Rob Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) showed up to help them retire the video for "Ice Ice Baby." The result - violence, hilarity, and broken mannequins (video, 30-second ad shows before video). Apparently unplanned, nobody knows for sure if this outburst was the product of genuine anger, or if he was just playing around. An unedited version (YouTube, lower quality) leads me to think that it was the former.
