A soundtrack to MTV's The Osbournes
is in the making starting with this...Ozzy Osbourne's youngest daughter, Kelly Osbourne, will sing Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach," with Incubus guitarist Mike Einzinger and drummer Jose Pasillas as her backing band.
What other songs would you put on there?

Meet "The Osburnes"
NYT article on a new MTV show starting March 5 that spends three months with Ozzy Osburne and his family. Best line: "The (press) session became heated when a reporter asked MTV's president of programming if Mr. Osburne's often-slurred, heavy British accent would be accompanied by subtitles."

Every Third Word Is A Bleep
Hey, hey, it's The Osbournes.Yep, Ozzy has his own TV show now.I just thought America needed to see what a normal family was really like
says Mrs. Osbourne.Ozzy won't be getting subtitles, though.

MTV plays videos?
It took a national tragedy, but it looks like their normal programming has been replaced with non-stop music videos without veejays
. That would be weird enough, but all the videos seem to be positively-themed
and spanning genres. They're occasionally breaking for original news reports and commercials.

PETA vs. Britney
Boy, it's hard to pick a side to root for in this fight. The paragraph that caught my attention, though, was this: the spotted cats are supposedly going to be prowling the [MTV's Video Music Awards] stage around the scantily-clad popster (and self-proclaimed virgin) as she wails her new hip-hop-flavored tune, "I'm A Slave 4 U," while simulating an orgasm on stage a la Madonna.
Yeah, except that Madonna was at least consistent in her portrayal of sexuality as healthy and fun. A self-proclaimed virgin faking orgasms on nationwide TV, on the other hand, sounds like a heapin' helping of bizarro mixed messages

20 years ago today
, the Buggles
started it all off. Love it or hate it now, MTV
has had a big impact on our culture, and most of us at some time in our lives have watched it. Anyone want to share what they used to like about MTV back when it was cool?

Watching MTV for 24 hours straight so you don't have to.
Michael Daddino is a brave man, especially since his marathon's happening during MTV's bikini-heavy, brain-light summer programming. Will his senses blur until he has visions of Christina Aguilera singing "We're Not Gonna Take It"> Will he break stuff after one too many re-airings of the latest Staind video? Tune in to "The Pornography of Semiotics" throughout the day and find out. (This special is part of the relaunch of Freaky Trigger
, one of the few places on the Web where the music writing doesn't, you know, suck.)

Teens Sue MTV Over Defecation Incident.
In addition to a cosmically beautiful headline, this should give everybody plenty of opportunities to gripe about pandering to the lowest common denominator in entertainment, why television is going to hell, etc. Boy, MTV is receiving quite the drubbing these days, eh?

I want my MTV.
There was a time when the only ads MTV showed were ads for the network itself. These are some of them. (from the U.K. so they might differ from the slate of ads run in the U.S.) Brings back many fond memories of the animated letters M, T, and V. (link courtesy of Saima)
Please proceed directly to "MTV used to show videos!" and then continue to more forced commiseration and remembrances of media conglomerate advertising as a substitute for a rich shared cultural heritage.

Are teens a reflection of the media or is the media a reflection of teenage culture? According to NYU prof Miller "The MTV machine does listen very carefully to children.
In rather the same way--if I can put it controversially--as Dr. Goebbels, [Hitler's] ministry of propaganda, listened to the German people. Propagandists have to listen to their audience very, very closely. When corporate revenues depend on being ahead of the curve, you have to listen, you have to know exactly what they want and exactly what they're thinking so that you can give them what you want them to have." The best Comic in recent memory NOT written by Scott McCloud
Remember the Real World in San Francisco? That was the one with Pedro dying of AIDS and Puck getting kicked off. Well, I just read a book about Pedro and Judd's friendship called Pedro and Me. This is the best comic I have read since 'Jar of Fools' or 'Understanding Comics.' I read it today at lunch and it moved me to tears. Anyone who knows someone with AIDS should read this book.

Is it just me, or was that the worst MTV Video Music Awards ever?
And Britney Spears did a lot to cement her reputation as a ... well, I won't say it since it isn't nice to use such words on the front page...

MTV Video Awards nominees have been announced
...and there's no "best alternative video" category anymore. What the hell! Granted, MTV has never been noted as a supporter of good music (remember 120 minutes
? that got the boot a while ago), but seeing those early "alternative" bands rock out on screen was what initially got me into music as a kid - I cringe at the thought that there's a whole new batch of 11 year olds out there who see the guitar as nothing more than a prop in a choreography routine.
At least I can take solace in the fact that Weezer
is finally touring the East Coast - all is not wrong with the world.

- Did anybody besides me see this movie on MTV last night? I never would have, since movies about boy bands aren't exactly my idea of a good time, but Leslie
told me to watch it and I always trust her judgement... she was right, it was hysterical! If you missed it, it's okay - it's playing once or twice more:
Fri 25 8:00 PM 2Gether MTV
Sat 26 4:30 PM 2Gether Pre-Show MTV
Sat 26 5:00 PM 2Gether MTV
Sun 27 9:30 AM 2Gether Pre-Show MTV
Sun 27 10:00 AM 2Gether MTV
Sun 27 6:30 PM 2Gether Pre-Show MTV
Sun 27 7:00 PM 2Gether MTV

Ever since MTV stopped playing videos, I find that I rarely even glance at it while channel surfing. But I do miss seeing amusing and creative videos. Luckily, Launch.com runs musicvideos.com
, which offers a couple thousand streaming videos to choose from. The 300k versions are pretty good. The Foo Fighters' "Learn to Fly
" is just great.

Recently, MTV had a special on 'hackers'
(scroll down to last weeks show), but apparently the people they contacted for background info didn't give them an interesting enough story. So the guys made one up
. The guy behind it all says he was just trying to make MTV's journalists look bad, but that's restating the obvious. Of course MTV is clueless and goes to any length to create a story. The worst part is that MTV isn't alone in this, every news outlet does this. The nightly news looks the way it does for the same reasons, it's all about entertainment.

Last night, I was sitting around thinking 'The Real World show on MTV really sucks, I wonder if anyone on the web feels the same way?' About 30 seconds later I found these guys
, and they're serious about it. God I love the internet.
