Mortal Engine (highlights; interview) and Glow (interview) combine dancing and projected video to stunning effect. The secret? The dancers aren't following the light — the light is following the dancers. Infrared lighting and a surveilance camera allow the software to track the dancers' movements even on a dark stage. Consequently,

Mortal Engine has no pre-rendered video, light or laser images. Similarly the music mix is open allowing various sounds to be completely generated from movement data. In addition, pre-composed phrases are triggered by the dancers’ motion or by the operator in relation to where the performers are in any given sequence. This essentially means that there are no fixed timelines and the production flexes according to the rhythm of the performers.

Those performers are Chunky Move, a Melbourne modern dance troupe. Frieder Weiss, the guy doing the video engineering, links to some other projects using this technology and has also worked with the Palindrome Performance Group, whose website is a pain to link into so you'll just have to explore it on your own.

Wayne White's paintings Wayne Who? He left Tennessee to study at the New York School of Visual Arts with Art Speigelman (he posed holding a broomstick for some of the characters in Maus) and Red Grooms. He came back to Tennessee to do puppetry work for a children's show called Mrs. Cabobble's Caboose, (5th link down, mpg) which in turn caught the attention of CBS who hired him to do the set direction for Pee Wee's Playhouse (I'll defer to this excellent post for Pee Wee videos), for which he played Mr Kite, Randy and Roger the Monster. Where else have you seen his work? The video for Peter Gabriel's "Big Time", and the video for the Smashing Pumpkin's "Tonight, Tonight". This was inspired by my tiny little comment here and he seems to be mentioned in passing here and here. Also: Waxy weighs in along with jonson, his IMDb profile and his Wikipedia entry. Not for use with some sets, consult doctor before taking internally.

Soft Cinema is a software+video project by media-theorist Lev Manovich, which 'mines the creative possibilities at the intersection of software culture, cinema, and architecture.' While perhaps more intriguing in prospect than in practice, it seems at least a noteworthy attempt at making something new. A DVD version of the project was released earlier this year.

The Open Video Project

The Open Video Project offers nearly 2,000 videos from various sources and collections, including such gems as 34 reels from the 1930s and 40s in the Digital Himalaya Project, a series of classic television commercials, and, from the Library of Congress, some shorts from the early 1900s, including the popular 2 a.m. in the Subway and A Ballroom Tragedy ("Vaudeville" is a good search term for finding more like this). Also, especially for MeFi, Johnny Learns His Manners.
