Now, with 95% of all markets signed up to broadcast his syndicated show, debuting in September, he could be due for a full blown resurgence. Or a dramatic crash and burn, either way Dave Koz is staring at his phone expectantly.

台北，臺灣 (Táiběi, Táiwān, aka Taipei) is home to many night markets. (What is a night market, you ask? It's a street, lined with stalls and vendors selling all sorts of food, clothes, gadgets, geegaws and entertainments. At night, it's full of activity and opportunities for people-watching. Night markets are sometimes located near temples.) The most famous include 士林夜市 Shìlín Yèshì (lots to see there) and 華西街 Huáxījiē, also called Snake Alley, but here are some links about one fairly typical mid-sized night market located in southeast Taibei City. From the street, during the day, 通化夜市 Tōnghuà Yèshì, also called 臨江夜市 Línjiāng Yèshì doesn't look like much. But as evening approaches, it starts to come alive with lots of stalls and shops. It's pretty much one long strip where you can take a nice leisurely walk. Some nice folks might show you around. There's a variety of foods to try: sausage on a stick, stinky doufu, pig's blood cake, almond doufu and tea, among others. And definitely don't miss the 鐵板燒 tīebǎnshāo teppanyaki. Check out some bling bling, or play at the basketball machine. You might find it amazing; it's certainly popular -- foreigners like it, too. Or, if night markets are too 熱鬧 rènào 'hustle-bustle, full of activity' for you, perhaps you prefer something more restful.

There's been a lot of great photography of Yosemite National Park. National Geographic has done some excellent work and there's plenty of photos that provide a great historical view of the area. More recently there was a fantastic zoomable 17 gigapixel project (previously). But this HD time-lapse day & night video of several locations around Yosemite Park provides perhaps the most amazing view of the area yet. More info on the making of the video at Project Yosemite.

How is it possible for an individual to build a planetarium? In most cases it is impossible. One must first truly love the beauty of the night sky and be willing to share that love with others. Wisconsin Man Builds Planetarium in His Backyard. The modern day planetarium is a high tech wonder portraying the night sky in all it’s glory. Almost every large city has a planetarium museum. These museums are wonderful places for all ages to learn about our awesome universe. Ironically, the only clear view of the night sky most of us have nowadays is from the inside of a planetarium. This is a place where the night sky is replicated in all it’s glory and where city lights or cloud cover cannot obscure it. In fact it is cloud cover that led me on a 10 year journey to build the world’s largest mechanical globe planetarium. In my backyard.

"All three of the 'Appeal' segments make fun of those pre-movie trailers where celebrities used to ask you to donate money. It's a little shocking to see them using Christopher Reeve begging for money for medical research until you remember this was written years before his accident. Spooky. More celebrities interrupt Chris, arguing over what the point of the Walter Sternberg Foundation is, all of them asking for money, but none of them agreeing on why. Charlton Heston, Robert Vaughn, Clint Eastwood, Mary Tyler Moore, and others show up to argue. They return later to yell at the audience for not giving enough money, accusing them of not caring. Finally, in the third appeal, Chris Reeve just snaps and loses it, furious at the audience. 'I don't know what to say. Words cannot express my contempt for you people. You sit there stuffing your faces in your Reeboks and your Levis 501s. You don't care about the children. You just want to beat the crowd out of the parking lot at the end of the movie. Well, as far as I'm concerned, you can all go f*** yourselves.' Then for the rest of the film, Reeve just randomly shows up in the background of scenes, glaring at the audience with naked disgust." The Kopp-Etchells Effect

Stunning pictures by Michael Yon show what happens when helicopters land in dust storms: The Kopp-Etchells Effect is thought to be the result of static electricity created by friction as materials of dissimilar material strike against each other, in this case titanium/nickel blades moving through the air and dust, but a precise definition is as of now not known. Von reports most pilots were unable to provide him with a satisfying explanation for why this occurred but within the comments at the end of the article some speculate this could be related to Triboelectric effect or the nature of the sand crystals in the dust.

Something Awful Forum Hilariously Hijacks CBC Anthem Contest

Something awful in a new CBC anthem. The CBC's Hockey Night in Canada is one of the highest-rated programs on Canadian television. It's something of a national shrine to our beloved sport. For the past 40-odd years, it's had a distinctive theme which most Canadians could hum. After something of a fiasco, the CBC lost the rights to the theme. They're running a contest to replace the venerated theme. A Something Awful forum user composed a truly dreadful entry ("mostly comprised of cat and sheep sounds, baby cries, and gunshots/explosions"), and got the community to 'vote it up' on the Anthem contest site. You really need to hear the awfulness to truly appreciate it. The SA commmunity has responded, and now it's the most viewed, top rated, and most commented-on submission on the site. There's a Facebook group and a spectacularly bad animated version on YouTube.
