Sat around the fire on Christmas day, a bloated drunken uncle emitting noxious turkey farts and telling racist jokes? Why, you need something with which to retaliate - and what better weapon could there be than a Gristleism, the new box of tricks from the Quietus' favourite pioneers of industrial music. Not to be confused with the Gristleizer.

Art of Noises

Luigi Russolo was a futurist painter, experimental composer, and instrument builder. In his 1913 manifesto "The Art of Noises" he declaimed the death of traditional Western music and foresaw the dawning of a new music based on the grinding, screeching, moaning, crackling and buzzing of mechanical instruments. He and his assistant Ugo Piatti built the Intonarumori to bring these new sounds - "the palpitation of valves, the coming and going of pistons, the howl of mechanical saws, the jolting of a tram on its rails, the cracking of whips, the flapping of curtains and flags" - to life. Erupting with the blare of The Art of Noises, noise as art first nestled under the wing of futurism. Too bad they were fascists. Since then, it has expanded and spread around the world, a mirror and a mockery of music. Or maybe its future. Sometimes under the auspices of experimentalism, sometimes as outsider art or inexplicable accident, noise is still with us, and won't likely ever go away. Some helpful links for further research. This is an attempt at an introduction to a widely misunderstood and varied form of art. My favorite bands composers and performance artists all suck etc. etc. Many of these links have been featured in previous mefi FPPs and threads, contains small parts, use hearing protection, best played loud, not suitable for small children.

Made in the image of 1980s "low-brow sleeze punk" public access TV shows like T.V. Party, Rappin with The Rickster, The Richard Bey Show, the more mainstream (or at least widely available) U.S.A. Up All Night, as well as elements of Cinema of Transgression, Мишка brings forth The Creepy Touch. Not safe for work, the squeamish, or squares. (Videos inside) Episode 1 (4:19) delved into the world of Nobunny, the man who stole the face of a jackrabbit, amongst other things. Episode 2 (4:36) stars a guy in a dinosaur mask from Uzi Rash. He is not a dinosaur, nor do dinosaurs exist in current times (except chickens). Episode 3 (5:21) is all about music made with a Nintendo by Yatagarasu, and half-Jewish hair-styles. Proper old stuff: TV Party N.Y., featuring Blondie + Klaus Nomi + more. The Internet Archive hosts its videos and offers downloads in a variety of formats. MacFie also has a YouTube channel with 480 videos and a video podcast [iTunes link, feedburner link]. David Arthur Kelly of seminal noise band Kittens passed away 3/30/08. Sonic Unyon are graciously offering three albums in memorial. Hopefully not an introduction to just how much these guys raged; here's a chance at the official documents. Kudos to Sonic Unyon for making it all happen.

Idle nostalgia led me to check on the mp3 page for Bulb Records (early home of Quintron and Andrew WK).

That all reminded me of space/noise rockers Gravitar, whose drummer Ben Cook has put up a fair amount their music (and other music he's made) for free. Oh, and he has a (rarely updated) music blog, which mentioned the Weird Sound Generator and Noizehole. All told, about three hours of free music.

Director Henry Bean has written and directed a new movie, Noise. It's about the bad kind of noise: car alarms that won't stop going off, garbage trucks that wake you up, endless horns honking. You know the pain. Turns out Bean used to run his own vigilante campaign against all things intolerably noisy, until he got arrested. In the film, Tim Robbins plays Dave, a character who becomes so obsessed with noise that he turns into a black-clad vigilante, "The Rectifier", waging his own crusade on those damn alarms shattering his quiet. After ending in jail and nearly sinking his marriage, he decides to try to go about his fight legally, collecting signatures for a petition which he hopes will get the issue on the ballot at an upcoming council election. The initiative is hugely popular but is blocked by the city's slimy mayor, played by William Hurt, forcing David to resort to an extreme strategy to make his point. Perhaps some advocacy groups against noise pollution will be happy to see this.

Tokyo-Ga: this excerpt from a Wim Wenders film offers an interesting little glimpse into the world of pachinko, a gambling obsession for so many in Japan. But while most are gazing hypnotically into the noisy little machines in order to win prizes or money, others are circuit bending them to make them even noisier. Here's the circuit bending pachinko guy's YouTube Channel: "I am Japanese circuit bender."

They've made a couple of bizarre music videos, played concerts in Japan and America over the last seven years, and now have an album and a live DVD. Weird boom car/subwoofer ads and more of the same. Another happy noise hater. NoiseOff's myth of loud m/c pipes is interesting. Ironically titled Hurt Report (pdf) about m/c safety. Previously, related with a dead link that seemed to be about Noise Awareness day, coming up in April, the significance of which is that people with hearing problems or different hearing issues are more troubled by noise than the average person. Obviously I 'm sympathetic to noise sufferers, since I am one, but I am not involved in any of the linked sites.
